As the COVID-19 crisis has rattled everyone’s world, we wanted to share with you some of our initial crisis leadership thoughts and lessons learned as a leader in a COVID world.
In this lecture we discuss how has the COVID pandemic or really any situation over the last year changed your leadership role. We take a look at the Kubler Ross Change Curve and challenge ourselves to make a choice to experiment and implement.
In this lecture we help define leadership and authentic trust. We discuss the root of trust and how to build credibility with two factors. We take a look at how trust leads to vulnerability and vulnerability leads to innovation (what we're all looking for as leaders). We analysis why we struggle to be vulnerable and how our ego plays a role in holding us back from true innovation.
Direct Application (homework): Before the next lecture, using B.R.A.V.E. what are two letters from BRAVE that you want to practice and role play in the mirror?
In this lecture we define motivation and why it's a cornerstone of leadership. We take a look at Herzberg's work on motivation and discuss motivators and demotivators in our environment.
Direct Application (homework): Before the next lecture, on the left hand side of the paper write down what motivates you at your job. On the right side, write down what demotivates you at your job. Bring to the next lecture.
In this lecture we take a deep dive into what are ways as a leader you can motivate your people. We discuss that motivators are all about job content and enrichment, while demotivators are about job environment. More importantly, we discuss extrinsic motivators vs. intrinsic motivators and how every leader should be focusing on growing and highlighting intrinsic motivators. We use the tool C.A.M.P. to help us diagnose our people and where they might be motivated or demotivated. We wrap up by highlighting some ways to strengthen competency, autonomy, meaningfulness and progress - all motivating factors - in order to grow your people.
Direct Application (homework): Before the next lecture, using the downloadable CAMP worksheet, find two people that you're leading, figure out which letters they are deficient in, and do one thing this next week to provide them some intrinsic motivation.
Get ready to get your hands dirty! In this lecture, we look how our people develop over time by teaching the Tree Cycle of Employee Development. Not only do our people develop over time, but our leadership and coaching should flex and adapt to those developing needs.
Direct Application (homework): Using the downloadable materials (Tree Cycle double sided circles and Coach Worksheet), assess the people you manage through the lens of the Tree Cycle (Stage 1-4). Put the initials of 2 people in the Stage box where you think they are developmentally. Using "Gardner Leadership Style," what is one thing you can do this week that could help them progress?
In this final lecture, we take a look at the IEE model of Empowerment and discuss the Leadership Growth Lattice. In conclusion, leadership in not about you! It's what you do with the people you have to bring out the best in them to accomplish your mission and vision.
Direct Application (homework): Download the Growth Lattice and have each of your people/employees fill it out. Review the findings with your people. Are there ways you can help them become a more holistic employee and leader for you?
