Course content

1 section16 lectures57m total length
  • Introduction5:10

Explore reinforcement theory of motivation, including the law of effect, quantitative law of effect, reinforcement types, and punishment guidance, to shape desirable behaviors and reduce undesirable ones in the workplace.

  • Explain What is the Reinforcement Theory of Motivation7:42

Explore the reinforcement theory of motivation, proposed by B. F. Skinner. See how behavior follows consequences under the law of effect, with positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, punishment, and extinction.

  • Explain What is meant by the ‘Law of Effect’1:27

Identify the law of effect, proposed by Thorndyke, stating that responses that produce a satisfying effect become more likely and those that produce a discomforting effect become less likely.

  • Explain What is meant by the ‘Quantitative Law of Effect’4:50

Explain the quantitative law of effect, a hyperbolic rate equation from reinforcement theory, where behavior rate depends on its own and other reinforcement rates, approaching an asymptote.

  • Describe the Types of Reinforcement1:04

Describe the four operant conditioning methods—positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment—and how each method increases or decreases the frequency of desirable or undesirable behavior.

  • Describe the Methods to Increase Desirable Behaviors5:02

Apply positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement from reinforcement theory to increase desirable behaviors, using rewards such as bonuses, promotions, appreciation, salary hikes, and removing unpleasant stimuli.

  • Explain What is meant by Avoidance Learning0:50

Explore avoidance learning as negative reinforcement that motivates behavior to prevent or stop an unpleasant stimulus and understand it to avoid the criticism from a supervisor.

  • Describe the Methods to Eliminate Undesirable Behaviors6:09

Explore reinforcement theory methods to eliminate undesirable behaviors, including positive punishment, negative punishment, and extinction, with practical limitations and real world examples.

  • Explain the Risks of Inappropriate Punishment3:50
  • List the Booth-Butterfield Guidelines for Effective Punishments0:34

Learn Booth-Butterfield's guidelines for effective punishments within reinforcement theory, emphasizing immediate, intense, and unavoidable consequences to improve real-world behavior.

  • List the Tips for Effective Workplace Punishment2:11
  • Explain the Relevance of Reinforcement Theory at Workplace0:52
  • Describe the Manager’s Role in Reinforcements4:15

Managers reinforce motivation by showing care and daily appreciation, using data-backed ideas, informal channels, and consensus, while applying organizational behavior modification and Skinner-inspired shaping to reinforce desirable behaviors.

  • Explain What are Schedules of Reinforcement0:39
  • Explain the Types of Reinforcement Schedules7:20

Explore reinforcement schedules, including continuous and intermittent reinforcement, and fixed interval, variable interval, fixed ratio, and variable ratio schedules.

  • List the Advantages and Limitations of Reinforcement Theory5:13

Requirements

  • No prior knowledge is required
  • A PC or a laptop with good internet connection and basic understanding of English.

Description

Those curious to learn about human behaviour under various circumstances.  You might have observed that individual's behaviour with positive consequences tends to be repeated, but individual’s behavior with negative consequences tends not to be repeated.  This course is for those who wanted to master the art of understand these behaviours.

Motivation is an inferred process within an animal or an individual that causes that organism to move towards a goal.

Motivation is an integral element in becoming successful in any undertaking. Motivation has also been defined as a desire or need which directs and energizes behavior that is oriented towards a goal.

  • Relevance of Reinforcement Theory at Workplace

Reinforcement theory of motivation was proposed by BF Skinner and his associates.  It states that individual’s behavior is a function of its consequences.  It is based on “law of effect”, that is, individual’s behavior with positive consequences tends to be repeated, but individual’s behavior with negative consequences tends not to be repeated.

‘Reinforcement Theory’ is also known as ‘Behaviorism’ or ‘Operant Conditioning’.

You can learn more about the Positive Reinforcement with the help of a case study which is given at the middle of the course.  There is another interesting case study which explains use of punishment for motivating desirable behavior.

The entire course is which structured which explains you the basic concepts initially and then briefs few advanced concepts which helps you to master this concept.

This course is divided into 15 sections and everything is in downloadable video formats.
