  • Welcome to the Course1:10

Welcome to Realistic Pastel Drawing for Beginners! My name is Diane, and I've been teaching art for 11 years. I will guide you through the process of learning how to draw a realistic image from a photograph using chalk pastel. You will learn accurate measuring techniques, coloring and shading, how to add rich textures and details, and how to add finishing touches that make the image stand out.

  • Preparation1:07

In this video, you will learn how to best prepare for this course.

  • Materials2:09

In this video, we will cover the materials you will need in this course:

Pastels (If you're buying pastels for this course, try to get NuPastel brand, so that we have the same type. This will be especially helpful if you wish to adhere strictly to what I'm doing, because I will be specifically naming off the colors I'm using as we work. If you already have pastels, just use yours and improvise with the colors choices).

For NuPastel 96 Color users, here is the list of colors you will use in this course. Download the attached color guide for examples of colors.

    • 324-P (dark purple red)
    • 216-P (purple red)
    • 206-P (raspberry red)
    • 336-P (fire engine red)
    • 296-P (cantaloupe orange)
    • 298-P (dark forest green)
    • 305-P (dark blue green)
    • 257-P (yellow-orange)
    • 212-P (bright yellow)
    • 217-P (light yellow)
    • 211-P (white)
    • 333-P (beige)
    • 353-D (dark brown)
    • 276-P (ivory)

    Additional Supples:

    • Paper with frame on it (any kind as long as it is meant for chalk pastel)
    • Pencil and eraser
    • Drawing board
    • Reference photo taped up on drawing board
    • Spray fixative (optional)

    To Start:

    • Use a rule to draw a frame on your page to match the size of your printed image (ex: the image should print 8x10", so draw a frame of 8x10" on your paper to match. If you print your image at a different size, just match that when making your frame).
  • Dealing with Pastel Flaws1:13

Sometimes you'll get a pastel color that doesn't lay down color well, in this video you will see what that looks like. When this occurs, you can try to smooth it out, or substitute a color for something similar.

Requirements

  • This class requires an open mind and an enthusiasm for learning to draw
  • This class is for beginners, no experience is necessary

Description

This class is a welcoming introduction to pastel still life drawing, created for complete novices who want to gain practical skills while also exploring the artistic side of drawing. Our goal is to strike a balance between mechanics—accurate measuring, shading, and layering—and cultivating an interpretive mindset that helps you “find the art in art-making.”

We’ll begin with a look at the simple materials you’ll need and how to set up your workspace. From there, we’ll carefully measure our subject to create a realistic framework, then walk step by step through shading, blending, and layering pastels to achieve depth, light, and natural texture. Along the way, we’ll discuss what details to focus on, what to let go of, and how to bring out the spirit of the subject without overcomplicating the process.

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

• Choose and set up pastel materials for success

• Measure accurately to achieve realism in still life subjects

• Apply shading and layering to create value and depth

• Explore both soft and hard edges for dimension and texture

• Develop an artistic mindset that allows for creativity and interpretation

By the end of this concise yet thorough class, you’ll have a finished pastel still life drawing and a toolkit of foundational skills you can carry into future projects. More importantly, you’ll gain confidence in both the technical and creative aspects of drawing—learning to embrace precision while also trusting your artistic intuition.

Who this course is for:

  • The complete beginner or the pastel dabbler who wants to acquire skills in realistic drawing techniques
