This report was written in 2018 and it reviews the epidemiology of measles in the UK and the contribution of globalisation while making recommendations for the future
Background: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypertension among commercial drivers in Choba community and the associations with different risk factors.
Method: A semi-structured questionnaire was used to obtain data from 154 drivers on their blood pressure status, awareness and associated risk factors
Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 45.5%. Many of the drivers (77%) were aware of their hypertensive state. Among those who smoke cigarettes, 47% of them were hypertensive while 43% of those who consume more than 21 units of alcohol per week were hypertensive. A high percentage of drivers (87%) who work more than 8 hours per day were also hypertensive. The percentage of drivers with high blood pressure among those that added extra salt to their diet was 49%. Other risk factors associated with hypertension in this group were a positive family history which accounted for 49% and obesity which accounted for 85%. Among the hypertensive drivers, 57% were compliant with their medication.
Conclusion: Data from our study indicated that the prevalence of hypertension among commercial drivers is significant. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, high salt intake and obesity are risk factors observed in this group suggesting important areas for prevention.
