Let's not waste time—let's cut right to the chase. There are five main reasons behind your procrastination:

    1. Exhaustion. If you’re carrying a huge load on your shoulders, at some point your psyche just burns out. You have low energy, low resources; your neurons are fried. You can’t keep living under such pressure. Your body and mind get tired. You lose the ability to be active and productive, and all you want is to run away from everything. No strength to work, or even to socialize.

    2. Fear! Fear of doing it wrong, doing it badly, getting criticized, getting a warning or getting fired, letting people down—fear, fear, fear! It paralyzes you. It makes you freeze—sleep a lot! Or it makes you run—do anything, move anywhere, talk to anyone, just to avoid the task at hand! Most often that means scrolling through social media.

    3. Perfectionism. At its core, it’s also fear. Trying to do everything flawlessly is about wanting to be the best (and fearing you’re not), craving admiration, applause, quick results, big money, and, most of all, constant praise! But behind those desires is fear—fear of not getting approval and love, fear of being alone, fear of seeing yourself as a failure, fear that others will be indifferent or hostile. If you don’t “wow” them, they’ll judge you, mock you, or ignore you. That’s what perfectionism is about.

    4. You have too many tasks. So many that you’re like that donkey in the story, who couldn’t decide whether to go for water or hay—and died while thinking about it! When you have too many tasks, your attention jumps all over the place. You can’t focus, can’t set priorities, and then—boom—you freeze up. Your brain gets overloaded. Stress kicks in. Cognitive and physical resources are limited, so you realize you can’t possibly do it all, which makes you even more stressed. It’s chaos: how do you structure it all if there’s no clear priority? More stress! So naturally, you want to run away from it all.

    5. Lack of motivation. If there’s no clear payoff, your psyche isn’t stupid. It will do anything (activate all the necessary mental defenses) to avoid spending the body’s LIMITED resources on something that offers nothing in return. If you lack motivation, maybe it was forced on you, or maybe you never clarified for yourself why you’re doing it, or maybe the reward is just too small.
