Kalyan Ray-Mazumder studied Theater and Psychology at Yale University, and then worked as an actor for 5 years, performing Off-Broadway in New York City. At the same time, he was tutoring the SAT/ACT for over 5000 hours. He himself has perfect and/or 99th percentile scores on the ACT, SAT, and GMAT.
What he discovered was that by bringing his acting background to the classroom he was better able to engage students and make them realize that they were more capable than they ever knew they were before. He’d see students who couldn’t memorize grammar rules but could memorize lines from their favorite movies and Drake songs, so he thought why not put the grammar rules to sketch comedy and rap? Lo and behold, the students memorized their rules.
Multiple of his students earned perfect scores and a majority of students earned 95th+ percentiles on the English section of the ACT/SATs.
He loved education and wanted to make an even bigger impact. At the time, he was working with primarily the 1% of the 1% (families who paid $250/hour for 6-8 months, so $8K/kid). Thus, he built Prepmedians, the test prep comedians, at Prepmedians(dot)com, which is founded upon the principle that all students deserve to laugh and learn.
Prepmedians is used worldwide and has produced groundbreaking results. Finally, there's a program that takes the same edutainment style of teaching that is present in elementary school (imagine how difficult it would have been to memorize your ABCs without the alphabet song) and applies it to test prep and English grammar education!
