Lectures 1-3, 5, 7, 9 are short and solo to the camera. The rest of the lectures are from live church services and much longer. Enjoy!
In Jesus' first instruction on prayer, He was quick to make correction on bad prayer habits. Getting some of the error out early is a great way to start!
Prayer is null and void until a person qualifies with this one characteristic in relationship with God, and then also UNDERSTANDS this one characteristic about themselves. It is called Righteousness. Righteousness is a masterful thing!
Think of prayer as closeness to God or drawing near to God, rather than you trying to push a button to get Him to improve something in your life. This keeps the relationship pure.
Knowing God's previously established will before we pray is essential for prayer to work. How can a person know God's will? His Word is His will. Until a person is interested in learning the words from God that were recorded in the Bible, prayer will continue to seem lost and uncertain.
Instead of rehearsing all the cares of your life, obey the scriptures that tell us to "cast our cares to Him". A worried and burdened heart is proof that a person does not have confidence in God. And prayer won't work unless we can keep the cares off of us.
Prayer involves not just talking to God, but also listening. God is speaking. He is attempting to guide us, lead us, and warn us. But we need to learn how to hear Him and obey.
The Holy Spirit is known by name. But He must also be known in friendship and closeness to the believer. He is our Helper in prayer, so we will need to practice our fellowship with the Holy Spirit if we want a healthy prayer life.
Faith like a mustard seed...what does that mean? It DOESN'T mean that all you need is a tiny bit of faith to go along with your huge amount of doubt and unbelief, and God will miraculously come through. Nope---it's something else.
The prayer of faith is simple and powerful...if you can do it.
God is looking for pure faith, childlike faith, simple belief, and honest desire. He'll do some amazing things for those who know how to trust Him.
Let me approach some of the many secrets of effective prayer by answering the question of "Why hasn't my prayer been answered?" I've identified 20 clear reasons, and there may be more. But take note that it's not to complicate things and overburden us with questions about ourselves. It's to eliminate our doubts and help us maintain full confidence in God when we pray and ask.
Remember, the prayer of faith is simple...if your heart can be free from condemnation and doubt.
When Paul said to fight the good fight of faith, this was what he meant. We learn the truth, so we can believe it, do it, and receive it. And we fight to keep the doubts and disobedience out. Then our heart stays clean and we can communicate properly with God. And then He can answer!
Your thought life impacts your prayer life. Christians don't get to just sit around thinking anything they please. We have Bible guidelines on what we get to think on. Our thought life turns into our belief system, our belief system turns into our words, and our words form our future.
Whatever things you desire, you can have, IF......
Rather than live with other's opinion about speaking in tongues, let's go see what the Bible says about it. God designed tongues. Jesus commanded us to speak in tongues (Mark 16). And the Holy Spirit explained why it's so vital for our spiritual life. You'll love this teaching!
Praying in tongues (or in utterance given by the Holy Spirit) is the supernatural means by which we connect with God, His Spirit, and His will. Without it, we are left to lead a carnal, natural, and less fruitful life with the Holy Spirit.
How do we pray for others more effectively? There is a prayer of supplication and a prayer of intercession, and those are both different than the prayer of faith. When another person's will is involved in our prayer requests, it falls into a different category of approaching the Lord, and we need to understand why.
Praise and thanksgiving are forms of prayer, and they must both be a huge part of our prayer life.
What happens when people pray together? Something different and something very extra-ordinary.
Pastor Chas Stevenson takes you on a journey through prayer that will result in a tremendous heart confidence in God and new joy in believing God and experiencing His goodness.
With a sincere examination of some important Bible truths, it becomes clear that God has given us the roadmap to success in communicating with Him—that it’s not just left up to chance or to some “mood” that God might be in on any particular day. He is looking for people to come close to Him, talk to Him, and then hear back from Him so they can do His will and receive His promises.
Chas is the Pastor of Houston Faith Church, which he and his wife Joni pioneered in 2002, in Houston Texas, and is now a thriving, Spirit-filled church in the city. In ministry, Chas has dedicated himself to helping others establish a relationship with God through the Word and the Holy Spirit in a way that allows the power of God and love of God to flow and bless many.
