Becoming happier with yourself.  In this lecture we look at the possibility of becoming happier in life.

Preview 03:23

For some, knowing that happiness is a 60/40 split - 60% percent unchangeable and 40% within their control, is exciting. You may be eager to get started identifying the actions you need to take for greater well-being - that's great!

For others it can create anxious feelings. I worked with a client whose first reaction upon learning the "60/40 of happiness" was to blame herself for how miserable she was - her dialog went something like this. "I know I'm not a cheerful person by nature - I come from a family of low positive emotion people, so understanding what's below the can't change line doesn't surprise me. However, to know that such a big part of how I feel about and experience my life, has been within my direct control, makes me angry for not doing something about it sooner."

1. For those of you in the eager category . . .

What intentional activity can you do today to increase your happiness - Have a phone call to make? A relationship to mend? A cause to commit to? A goal to set?

2. How would you coach a loved one who internalizes this information in an unfavorable way?

Begin by identifying one positive state you'd like to practice. (e.g. Gratitude, Joy, Serenity, Interest, Hope, Pride, Amusement, Inspiration, Awe, love). Then brainstorm and collect the pictures, images, objects, letters, poems, etc. that are conducive to that particular state and place those items in a binder, folder, or whatever container works best for you and your items.

Keep your portfolio with you or in a place in which you can view it often. The psychological priming portfolio is designed to be a collection of material that is encourages a particular state.

A few times a day pause and come into emotional alignment with your portfolio.
