Description
This course is for beginner-level learners, enabling them to understand the concepts of polymer science and its mechanisms. This leads to enhancing fundamental knowledge in the field of polymers and to categorizing the materials for engineering / technological applications. During the course, you will experience an understanding of polymers and their types. This course has nine modules with relevant video lectures and notes starting from fundamentals, types, properties, industrial polymer manufacturing methods, and mechanisms involved in the process. In addition, we have discussed the specific polymer properties and chemical principles involved in conducting and insulating polymers. The following are the modules/topics, discussed in this course.
Introduction to Polymers: Monomers, Polymers, Functionality, and Degree of polymerization
Classification of polymers: Based on the Source, Physical State, Backbone, Tacticity, Chemical structure, and end-use applications
Types of Polymerisation: Addition polymerization, condensation polymerization, copolymerization, and ring-opening polymerization
Polymerization Techniques: Bulk polymerization, Emulsion polymerization, Solution polymerization, and Suspension polymerization
Mechanism of polymerizations: Mechanism of addition polymerization: Free radical polymerization mechanism and Ionic (Anionic and cationic polymerization) – Mechanism of condensation polymerization
Piezo and pyro electric polymers; Photoresists (positive and negative)
Properties of polymers – Structure-property relationships – Thermal characteristics (Thermoplastics and thermosetting)
Conducting polymers: Introduction – Types – Doping theory - Organic electronics Manufacturing methods.
Insulating polymers: Introduction and types (thermal and electrical) with examples.
Course Instructors: Dr KR Aranganayagam and Dr S Jyothi
