Description

PMI is taking us back to the ROOTS — and honestly, that’s the perfect title for this moment. The PMBOK® Guide feels like it’s reconnecting with the foundations that made project management a discipline we could trust, scale, and teach with confidence. This new team took on a courageous, high-stakes task.

Now it’s time to unpack what’s changed, what’s clearer, and what it means for how we lead projects in 2025 and beyond. Join the conversation. Bring your curiosity. Bring your questions. Let’s explore the PMBOK® Guide ROOTS together.

The Big Shift: From Principles Back to Processes

To understand why the 8th Edition is so important, you have to look at the last two versions:

  • PMBOK® 6 (The "Roots"): This was the guide we all knew. It was highly structured and process-based. It gave us the 5 Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Controlling, Closing) and the 10 Knowledge Areas. It was a "how-to" manual.

  • PMBOK® 7 (The "Big Change"): Released in 2021, this was a radical shift. It completely removed the process groups and knowledge areas, replacing them with 12 high-level Principles and 8 Performance Domains. It focused on the "why" (the principles) but left many practitioners asking, "Where's the 'how'?"

The PMBOK® Guide 8th Edition is the hybrid solution. It keeps the high-level principles from the 7th Edition distilling the 12 down to 6, but reintroduces the foundational process groups from the 6th Edition as "Focus Areas". It's the best of both worlds.
