
Select suitable exercises from the Basic Pilates repertoire presented in Part 3 of this course, employing the 6 Neutral Spine Methods, and create a 30-minute lesson plan tailored to your needs.
In our mat class, we covered a variety of fundamental, intermediate, and advanced Pilates exercises. We designed a class that would cater to students at different levels, combining exercises from each section.
We started with a warm-up, focusing on fundamental lateral breathing and reminding ourselves of the three references for the powerhouse. We then moved into fundamental exercises such as leg changes for abdominal strength and stability, and supine spine twists with added rotation. We progressed to shoulder bridge preparations and the full shoulder bridge exercise.
For intermediate abdominal work, we performed exercises like double leg stretch, single leg stretch, cross cross, hamstring pulls, leg circles, side lying leg lifts with various variations, air clam, and side leg kicks. We also blended fundamental exercises into a mermaid sequence.
Moving on to the all-fours position, we did front support preparations and leg lifts, prone exercises including one leg lifts, thoracic lifts, and back extensions to open and strengthen the upper body. We then transitioned to sitting neural spine positions, performing spine stretch forward, saw with upper body rotation and hamstring stretches, supine roll-ups, rolling like a ball, and open leg rocker.
Advancing further, we practiced roll-overs, sitting twists, side bends, and twists. In the prone lying neural spine position, we did rocking preparations, child's pose, swimming preparations, double leg kicks, and child's pose again. Next, in the supine neutral spine position, we performed the hundred preparation and advanced variations, corkscrew and its variations in sitting and supine positions, jack knife, side lying bicycle, scissors, transitioning to downward facing dog, and rolling up and down to all fours.
In the prone neutral spine position, we focused on single leg kicks, advanced swimming, and incorporated stretching in between with kneeling lunges and rocking advancements. We concluded the class with standing exercises, including side bends, back extensions, arm circles, and finishing in a praying position.
Overall, we had a comprehensive class that combined exercises from different levels to provide a challenging and well-rounded Pilates experience.
