Welcome to Organize and Manage Personal Finances w/ Google Sheets, brought to you by Personal Finance Spreadsheet. This lesson will walk you through the five (5) agenda items in this course, and set clear expectations as to what the final output of this course is intended to accomplish
I recommend taking action on five (5) optional pre-steps before building-out your very own Personal Finance Spreadsheet. Together, these pre-steps will help you move faster, and be incredibly organized in pulling together your Personal Finance Spreadsheet. In addition, they'll give you valuable insight into the every corner of your financial status
You made it - finally, the tutorial! This tutorial, although made-up numbers, is based of my very own personal use of Personal Finance Spreadsheet
You'll use the accounts tab to keep track of your lines of credit (i.e. debt) and cash accounts (i.e. asset).
For debts, these include such things as credit cards, school loans, personal loans, auto loans, accounts in collection, etc.
For assets, these include such things as checking and savings accounts, investment accounts, 401k's, vested RSUs, etc.
Learn how to populate a bill schedule and coordinate against a regular cadence of updates to make for a strong record of truth each month
It's simple, and that's the point. Budgets are hard to have fun with, so I made-up an atomic-level budget that helps you break expenses into three simple categories
Pull-in the final piece of the puzzle, which is your income and credit. These inputs don't cascade to other sections of the Google Sheet, but that doesn't mean they're not important to properly document. This closes the loop on everything else, and helps you keep a pulse on two of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy financial status
Our fourth agenda item is Post-Steps, the things I recommend you do to help make maintaining your Personal Finance Spreadsheet a piece of cake
Our final agenda items is Additional Resources. A list of books, people, online tools, podcasts, and much more - all of which have helped me
Overview
Hi, I’m Colby – and I like simple things that make me feel organized, and in control.
For some time now, I’ve been tweaking the way I manage my personal finances in the pursuit of keeping it simple, yet sophisticated. I tried a handful of online budgeting tools, smartphone apps, and even considered paying for a professional service. But somehow, none of these avenues seemed to qualify for what I was in seek of.
I’d start off enthusiastic on keeping good habits, only to find myself forgetting about the app after a couple weeks, being bombarded with ads and over-the-top notifications on every little movement in my account or billing schedule, and/or it requiring just as much effort on my end as if I were to just build a financial ledger myself.
So, I decided to do just that and build one my own way. And "lo and behold", I discovered that the easiest tool to keep up with, customize to my liking, encourage me to stay engaged in with my financial well accounts, and most importantly share with others is actually a plain old spreadsheet with a few simple, yet powerful formulas.
I also discovered that by combining my homegrown spreadsheet with a basic cadence of regular check-ins, and a few additional resources, that I had built an incredibly solid foundation for truly understanding my financial situation.
Being able to see your entire financial world in one place helps you see the big picture. And from there, strategies start to come to life along with a deep sense of organization and confidence moving forward.
And now I’m sharing this spreadsheet, and the overall process with you!
