Description

Performance management function is as old as human civilization. Even the kings and emperors of the old times used to appraise the performance of their warriors and courtiers by conducting special sessions and rewarding them with special honors and decorations. The performance management function was officially recognized as an HR function during the times of the second world war, since then the HR departments have been working on it as a specialized function and have prepared a streamlined process to perform it.

The process of performance management includes defining the goals, helping the employees to move closer to the defined goals, and measuring their performances. The consolidation of all the performance measurements of all the employees in an organization results in measuring the performance of the organization. Thus, performance management is not just helpful in understanding the good and bad performing employees but also is an important part of understanding the progress of the organization towards the goals for which it has come into existence.

Although theoretically, it is important to measure the performance of the employees, there are many practical difficulties when one attempts to measure the performances due to the varied sets of responsibilities, vintages, skills, and levels of development. This has resulted in the inception of various performance assessment methods, which HR must design, implement, and track.

In this course, the learners will learn about the basics of performance management and the most used performance assessment methods. The focus of the course is on briefing the learners about the role that HR is expected to play in the performance management system and the best practices that the HR departments in the world are implementing to make performance management more inclusive, unbiased, and objective function.
