A patent specification is a document describing the technical details of the invention, for which the legal protection is sought. It is a techno-legal document containing full technical details of the invention and claims to the patent rights.

The drafting of a patent specification plays very important role in different stages of the patenting process, such as, prosecution, management and maintenance during its term and finally monetary gain. Drafting a patent application is one of the most important and at the same time one of the most difficult process as a well drafted application decides the fate of an invention.

As per Indian Patent Law, the specification can be filed either in Hindi or English. It is important for the applicant to disclose fully and particularly, various features constituting the invention claimed in a patent specification.
