  • The drawing for this picture7:02

The drawing of this picture. In the resources you will find the drawing which you can download and adapt to the size you wish. Don't forget that you could also rearrange the subjects to suit yourself. For example you might what to paint it in a portrait format rather than landscape, and you might want to leave out some of the objects or move them about. Use it as a model and take what you want....

  • Tips on acquiring symmetry - easy2:20

How to create a symmetrical object. Easy when you know how and this short video will explain just that. Use a tracing. For example if you are drawing something round or with curves and you can't get it as good on one side as the other, do this. Get some tracing paper and trace off the side you like then turn it over and trace the shape down. You will then end up with a mirror...

  • Start the letters beginning with the 'F' and the 'R'10:03

Let's get painting I am starting in the top left hand corner beginning with the 'F' and the 'R' in the cobalt blue, making sure to cover the rest of the drawing. The video shows you how I go about painting with a steady hand. I hope it helps. Picture I have uploaded the photo of the FR and the CE

  • Painting the white 'N'6:04

The white letter the 'A' and the 'N.'

I am going to use a very pale wash of paynes grey and by the way that I use the wash will give the letter a three dimensional appearance. I will do the 'N' for you to see the process.

I have also used masking fluid to mask off the cigarette smoke and some of the lettering on the cigarette packet.

I have uploaded the picture of the AN

  • Painting the ashtray6:40

    Painting the ashtray.

Here the logo is slightly different, but as on the jug I traced it straight from the real object. On the jug I used a watercolour pencil to do the black line but later discovered that some bits had blown onto the cup and I had to remove it carefully. Here I used a paint brush and pen with a rule. If you haven't done my TOP TIPS course where you will find...

  • Painting the Ricard water carafe8:51
  • Let's see where we are overall.2:48

    Where have we got to.

I'm just going to take a look at the picture as a whole and see what remains to be done. What can be done off camera (as it just colouring in) and what will be filmed.

  • The croissant.8:37

    You will need:

    Pretty simple really

    1 Watercolour paper 300gm

2 Paint colours, Coblat blue, bright red/scarlet, cadmium yellow, paynes grey, raw umber and white.

    3 Watercolour brushes such as a 6 and 2

    4 Optional masking fluid

5 "B pencil and eraser, jars of water and kitchen towel.

  • Painting the frog.11:29

    Freddie the Frog.

I paint the frog as shown on the photo as that is the sort we have here in the south of France. Again sticking to the palette and using a number 2 brush

    Resources.

  • The glasses.11:13

    The glasses.

These two videos demonstrate how I painted the glasses and the contents. I used a weak solution of paynes grey for the glasses and after deciding of red wine ( as there was cheese) I mixed the red with the blue for a deep colour. Then for the champagne I mixed a little yellow with white. I did use masking fluid to create the bubbles, but later decided to outline the bubbles with a fine brush.

NOTE: I forgot about the red of the 'E' showing through the champagne, so I added post photo

    Resouces

  • The Eiffel Tower 'A'0:25

    The Eiffel Tower 'A'

I didn't film me painting this because I had to learn right on over the work to do it. I used the paintbrush and rule technique, when I wasn't painting freehand. I used a pale paynes grey as it is a very 'busy' structure if I'd done it in black it would have looked to strong against everything else.

NOTE: On the two outside uprights, notice how I have placed the boxed areas of the structure, with the crosses in, closer together as it goes up. This gives an impression of height

  • The newspaper 'Le Monde.'7:51

    The newspaper 'Le Monde.'

This is one of the national newspaper, meaning 'The World' and with it's classic type face is a good French image. As the paper used for newspapers is not white I just put a pale wash over all of it, Then traced the heading and mixed a bit of raw umber with paynes grey so the colour was not too strident.

The technique I have used for creating the print area is something I learnt as a graphic artist when we used to produce 'mock ups' to give the client an idea of the design, and it works well. I have not put a colour photo in as I wanted it to remain monochrome, a good exercise in working with colour values.

    Resouces

    1 The heading

  • The cigarette packet8:15

    The cigarette packet

Still working with the same palette I used the blue with a touch of paynes grey to get a darker colour blue. I added a few more cigarette tips in the packet and used a pale grey to indicate the silver inner and the crease on the lid.

I had a problem with the masking fluid leaving a dirty mark, so I will us some white paint afterwards.

  • Finishing touches and overview19:00

    Finishing touches and overview.

As sometimes happens when you finish a painting, you suddenly decide to add or change something, so this last lecture is in way of further explanations and to review the painting as a whole. I suddenly decided to add the coins which I painted off camera as an afterthought and later the sugar.

With that in mind when you do finish something don't rush to frame it or whatever you are going to do with it. Leave it somewhere where you see it when you pass, and this way you can spot anything that you might want to add or improve. Take your time. This is also recommended if you have a problem with a painting and are not sure what is wrong with it.

I have really enjoyed painting this and I hope you do too. Thanks love Nicola

Description

We all have images that make us think of our first trip to Paris.

FABULOUS painting with a twist. Almost colouring in.

Additional content added 2024

This is a super painting for those who want to learn to create an more abstract composition in a modern style while still enjoying the magic of watercolor paints.

It's a 'still life' but there are no vases of flowers or bowls of fruit. It's modern, suggestive and something you can create your own narrative from.

It will give the student a new way of looking at the use of watercolor paints and will help them to think about creating a composition of some of their favourite 'still life' objects. Maybe some souvenirs from a memorable holiday of occasion, to create a atmospheric picture as a gift or souvenir.

The color palette is limited and you will learn an approach to painting glass, smoke and how to plan objects for the b est effect.

What's more, it's perfect for those who like to paint in a more controlled way.

  • Why choose one of my courses?

Because, as a self taught artist I understand how a lot of people feel about their creative work, sometimes anxious, sometimes overwhelmed and often that it's not 'good enough'. I will hold your hand as you overcome these fears as I offer a friendly, relaxed and sensitive teaching style.

I also have years of experience of teaching people of all levels both in person and via the internet.

Do one of my courses and you will feel as if I am in the room with you every step of the way.

Enjoy your painting, love Nicola
