Anxiety is a normal human emotion. Some of us simply learn to have too much of it (unintentionally of course).

Have you tried lots of ways to get rid of it or overcome it? Maybe you've had some sort of psychological therapy? Maybe you've had medication? Have you read books about it? But these haven't really had any lasting effect?

It is possible to reduce or completely overcome these anxiety habits but you must go about it in the right way.

This course is based on sound psychological theory and it has been tested by me.

I am a clinical psychologist who in earlier life suffered for twenty years with panic attacks and obsessions. I got by with various coping strategies. I thought I was treating myself by doing what my professional training had taught me, but it never worked totally. It was only when too many things went wrong all at once and I lapsed into an acute anxiety state that I really had to look at what wasn't working and why. I wasn't able to leave the house for fear of having a panic attack. I even had them in the house.

This was my lucky break because I had to analyse what was going on and work out once and for all how to get rid it. And I did.

I know that this works. I also know that many people fail because they don't actually do what they need to do. I too was guilty of this for many years. In recent years I have had patients attend my courses and come along afterwards and tell me it doesn't work. I then tell them that "It works. You're not doing it!" After that we go through it again step by step to find which bit they are doing wrong - and it's always there!

Anxiety is not a virus or a disease that you catch. Anxiety is a normal human response that some of us learn to apply too often. This isn't intentional. But because it is learnt, it can be unlearnt if done the right way. I will show you the right way.

The course is mainly in two parts. The first part can be done as slowly or as quickly as you wish. It teaches you to understand what anxiety is, where it comes from and how it develops. With this knowledge the steps needed to overcome it make total sense. Nobody will keep at any task if they don't fully understand why they're doing it! This is often where traditional approaches to psychological therapy go wrong. It's not that the approach is unsound, it's just delivered in the wrong way.

The second part of the course leads you step by step towards incorporating new ways of thinking into your everyday life. There are new habits for your general wellbeing and also specific ways of responding when the anxiety threatens. Learnt properly by practising the techniques taught, these new habits will gradually replace your old anxiety habits.

The lessons themselves are mainly video. There are pdf notes that can be downloaded as well as audio tracks for practising. The main therapeutic approach used is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This is known as third wave CBT and it incorporates the practice of mindfulness. For anyone who is averse to doing long meditations, these are entirely optional. Very short (30 seconds) meditations are enough to do the job!

In order to benefit from this course you must be prepared for it to take time and to actually practise what you are asked to practise. After all, you wouldn't expect to become a great pianist if you never practised between lessons would you? Yet all too often people having psychological therapy think they can get by with just the therapy sessions!

One thing I know from personal experience is that if you actually follow the steps you will overcome your anxiety habit. If you cheat… well, I think you know the answer to that!

I look forward to having you on my course

Many treatments for anxiety fail because they attempt to only get rid of the symptoms for now.

Anxiety is a basic human emotion that will always have roots in any human being. The way to overcome it or reduce it to a manageable level is to understand what it is and why it happens.

Preview 05:37

The medical approach to overcoming physical problems is usually to get rid of the symptoms. This may be done by removing them (surgery), masking them (medication), or temporarily fixing the body so it can repair itself (pins, casts).

None of these is appropriate for a psychological problem. But because we go to the doctor when we have either a physical or a psychological problem, we automatically (unconsciously) expect a similar approach. We expect the doctor to fix it for us.

This is what often gets in the way of recovery in psychological difficulties.

The Medical Model Trap and Why Incorrect Expectations Can Get in the Way

Overcoming anxiety is perfectly possible provided you are prepared to do the work.

There is no magic formula, just clear logic. This course can't work magic for anyone who wants me to do it for them. This course will produce results for anyone who follows what is taught and puts in the practice.

When something is removed from our lives it creates a gap. Unless that gap is filled with something desirable, it is likely that something undesirable will find its way in. Nature doesn't like a vacuum.

Introduction to Section 3 - What Is Back-Up?

How to go about starting to create something now to fill the gap that will open up as your anxiety habits become less significant in your life.

Creating Back-Up

A Summary of the main points of Section 3 and a pdf download of homework tasks.

+ What You Really Need to Know about Anxiety
12 lectures 01:02:22

This section focuses on the mechanics of how and why humans learn anxiety habits. The introduction explains why it is vital to fully understand this in order to be able to change things.

Introduction to Section 5 : The Mechanics

A look at the Arousal System. We each have one but there are slight variations which must be recognised and understood so as to manage it to good effect.

The Arousal System

This lecture considers the Survival Instinct: how it is designed to work and why it isn't always helpful where anxiety is concerned, until we become aware of it.

The Survival Instinct

The real purpose of the Fight or Flight response: why we all have it and where some of us go wrong in managing it.

Fight or Flight

It is the Survival Instinct that triggers warnings which lead, in some of us, to inappropriate and unwanted anxiety. There are two categories of things which we get warnings about. This lesson looks at the first of these.

The Survival Instinct Warnings - 1

This lesson considers the second category of things which we get danger warnings about and the part they play in anxiety habits.

The Survival Instinct Warnings - 2

The Startle Warning is the key to anxiety control. This lecture describes how this leads to the development of anxieties in those who are unaware of its power. It also makes it clear that learning not to buy into its warnings will eventually get rid of unwanted anxieties.

The Startle Warning

The Fight or Flight response is a life-saver, when triggered appropriately. This lecture considers those situations where it is triggered inappropriately and how anxieties result from this.

When Fight or Flight is inappropriate?

Brains work mechanically. We often attribute greater significance to what our brains tell us than is necessary. Our brains only tell us what we have taught them to tell us. This lesson explains this.

Brains Link Things

This lecture is a simple task for you to do to further demonstrate your brain's linking habits.

More About Your Links

The effects of having taught your brain both positive and negative links. Identifying where these may have outlived their usefulness.

Where will Section 6 take us

We are not all afraid of the same things. This lesson considers what it is that determines which things we develop a fear of and which we don't.

Selective Fear

Learn about what not to do in response to Startle Warnings if you want to lose your anxiety habits.

The Wrong Response

There are two parts to a human - a mind and a body. When anxiety reactions arise both parts are involved. This lesson considers a better way of responding with your body.

The Right Response for Your Body

This follows on from the previous lesson and considers better responses for your mind

The Right Response for Your Mind

Here you will learn the technique which I used myself to finally overcome my panic attacks for good. This technique relies on an ability to visualise.

Using Calm Scene

This is where you can listen to instructions for using the Calm Scene tracks as well as download an audio and pdf version. You can also download three Calm Scene audio tracks - a beach, a garden and a woodland.

Calm Scene Instructions and Downloads

This lecture introduces a second technique which you can practise and then use to divert your thoughts from inappropriate anxiety. This is especially useful for those who are unable to visualise.

Using Momentary Meditation

Here you can download both pdf and audio instructions as well as audio tracks for three different Momentary Meditations.

+ The Feelgood Part and Mindfulness
4 lectures 28:58

Here we question traditional approaches to overcoming psychological problems and their focus on what's wrong.

The Feelgood Way focuses on what feels good.

Introduction to Section 7 : The Overall Feelgood Factor

Being in the moment is a key concept of mindfulness. Keeping mind and body together is calming in itself. This lesson looks at the practical application of this way of being.

Being in the Moment: The Power of Now

Before you learnt to talk you probably didn't worry. You just took things as they were because that was all you were able to do. We need words to worry effectively.

This lesson considers what we might usefully re-learn from toddlers or our pets.

Acceptance: Going Back to the Beginning

Our ability to use language enables us to label and categorise our experiences. When we use negative labels we are influencing our future emotions. Can we do away with labelling?
