Welcome to the course! Enjoy.
In this video we cover the basics. We will get an overview of the user interface and we will also get started drawing shapes and curves.
This is the solution to the first exercise. It includes step-by-step instructions on how to draw the frog and the fly.
This is the solution to the second exercise. It includes step-by-step instructions on how to draw the 4 suits.
Welcome to the second chapter! In this chapter we start animating.
In this video we explain how to create simple animations.
Unfortunately exporting can be slightly tricky in opentoonz. But this video gives us step-by-step instructions on how to get it done!
In this video the frog finally gets it's well-deserved snack! Congratulations Froggy, your patience has finally paid off.
Another walk through in which we animate an arrow piercing a heart.
In this section we will learn about:
Tweening with the animation tool.
Nested animations
Creating shape tweens
Exporting
The animation tool is very useful. In brief: set the size, location, rotation etc of the initial frame as well as of the final frame and opentoonz will do all the work and calculated each frame in between.
It's often useful to loop animations within a larger animation. Just think of a wheel rotating, or wings flapping. This video shows us how.
Using the animation tool has it's limitations. For example the object we are animating does not change shape. But we can use level strips to achieve this.
This exercise helps us get practical experience using the animation tool.
Once we've animated a single bounce we can repeat the very same bounce as many times as we want without having to recreate the tween over and over again.
In this exercise we practice morphing a blob.
This exercise is further useful practice.
Welcome to the next chapter. In this section we will create a light sabre battle. The project will help us learn some new nifty tools and features, like the function editor, special effects and adding a sound track.
We start by importing all the resources.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
In this video we do the first rough animation of the light sabre.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
For the perfectionists among us, let's fine tune it a bit more.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
In this video we learn to use the Fx Schematic to add an extra glow to the light sabre.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
In order to cut off my arm we'll need a bit of photo-editing. No worries, we'll just use Gimp! It's is also free and open source.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
We can use function curves to easily animate the arm as it falls to the ground.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
Now comes a little sleight of hand as we 'delete' my arm from the original footage.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
Of course no light sabre battle is complete without the obligatory 'woosh' sounds.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
Glad to see you made it this far! In the final sections we will create an animation in the style of South Park. We will learn about:
the stage schematic
the skeleton tool
the plastic tool
how to lipsync using papagayo
The stage schematic is useful when it comes to grouping layers together in a hierarchical way.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
The skeleton tool is used in combination with the stage schematic and can be used to rig characters.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
The plastic tool can be used to create animations of objects that are flexible and elastic.
(If you are following along with the same resources you can download them in the introduction lesson of this section)
Hello all, this is the free version of my Opentoonz course. Opentoonz is a high quality and feature-rich animation suit that has been free and open source since 2016 and has been used by studios such as Studio Ghibli and Rough Draft Studios.
In this course we will cover the following topics:
Get started using the basic drawing tools
Create frame-by-frame animations
Importing assets and exporting
Learn about advance animation tools like:
Motion and shape tweening
Special effects
Adding sound effects
Rigging a character
Using the plastic tool for animating flexible objects
Lipsyncing
The only down side to Opentoonz is that the learning curve can be quite steep. But don't worry! In this course we will go over everything you need to know to get started.
This course contains both 'explainer' videos which provide a lot of information as well as practical exercises designed to help the learner consolidate and remember the information and turn the passive knowledge into a valuable skill.
This course is perfect for people who are interested in taking the first steps in animation and don't want to spend much on high monthly license fees.
