A short lecture with pictures showing you where to find the area to ask questions, make note, find extra information in resources etc.
Resources
1) How to find your way about
I'll chat about this painting explaining why I chose.
You may find it helpful to just watch the course through to begin with it. Then get yourself set up with your paints and paper and make a start.
No matter what the subject is of your painting, take time to study it and ask your self a number of questions.
1 What is it that makes me want to paint this so that I have the interest to complete it ?
and
2 Can I emphasis the aspect I like in the painting?
3 What composition would show it off to it's best?
4 What possible challenges will I meet?
5 What aspects do I need to practise and work on before I start?
Take time now to consider the above and it will save you heartache later on.
Resources
1) Photo of the view
2) Photo of the building
Here I'l show you exactly what you will need.
Resources
1) A list of the materials and equipment
I am always telling my students to solve the painting problems before you get to them. I don't always follow my own advise so learn from my errors.
Here we will look at the final composition and consider if the balance and proportions are pleasing. Do we need to change anything to get the most out of the subject.
Resources
1) Photo of the composition drawing
2) Photo of the building drwaing
I'll show you the colours I would suggest you use. If you don't have the exact ones just get as near as you can. And after all we all see colours differently and so do computer screens.
Resources
1) The painted colours with their names
2) A photo of the painting after the first was of colour to show you how pale I start
Deciding where to start is sometimes a question of individual choice. However I would advise you, as always, to start with the palest colours, so here we will begin by putting in the distant landscape.
Always remember you are constantly checking your colour values and overall balance. Start pale and you can always add more colour later.
I always like to gradually increase the density of colour very slowly all over the painting, a bit at a time.
Here I start to work on the building in particular the roof. Considering different ways of tackling it.
Resources
1) A photo of a previous painting of the same subject
Keep checking you colours as you go along
Gradually increasing the detail.
Painting distant trees without leaves, quite a challenge.
Here is an excellent example of one aspect I didn't give enough forethought to before I got to painting it.
Always try out ideas for subjects before you get to them.
Nearly at the end and the time when you need to decide if you've done enough.
The finished painting.
I hope you enjoyed doing this one and will want to do some more of my painting workshops.
Happy Painting, Nicola

NEW Bonus lecture added July 2023
Pick a picture and paint me. Go on have a go.
Another fabulous watercolour painting workshop from Nicola for the aspiring artist to enjoy painting and to learn about this exciting painting medium as you go.
A workshop which I believe is suitable for all levels because I explain every step in my friendly teaching style. My slow and clear narration will help you understand each process, filmed in such a way, you will feel as if you are standing next to me.
All the information about what you will need and what you will learn is listed and every lecture covers a stage in the painting, stopping naturally, as you would to let your paint dry.
Watch each film, stopping as often as you like and working quietly at your own pace when it suits you. And remember the films are your's to look at time and again for guidance and inspiration.
Follow my instructions to the letter or take the bits that you want and make changes as you please. This painting workshop is to help you see what is possible to do with watercolour paints and to help give you the confidence to feel more comfortable when you plan and paint your own chosen subjects.
If there is anything which is not clear, all you have to do is send me a message or post your question in the discussion section. And do share you painting with us all in the course, it's great to see what is being painted, it encourages other students, boosts everyone's confidence and makes me feel the work has been worthwhile.
I am here to help you build your confidence and knowledge so you can get as much as you can from this rewarding pass time.
Why choose one of my courses?
Because, as a self taught artist I understand how a lot of people feel about their creative work, sometimes anxious, sometimes overwhelmed and often that it's not 'good enough'. I will hold your hand as you overcome these fears as I offer a friendly, relaxed and sensitive teaching style.
I also have years of experience of teaching people of all levels both in person and via the internet.
Do one of my courses and you will feel as if I am in the room with you every step of the way.
Enjoy your painting, love Nicola
