An introduction to the course
After completing this lecture you will know and understand the main functions of the nose especially those aspects which are relevant to the course itself
In this lecture I talk about some of the practicalities of nose breathing and share my personal experience with it. It has made a big difference to my overall Health and FItness. You may already be a nose breather but if not why don't you give it a try. You use your own body as the laboratory and observe and monitor the changes.
The previous lecture I shared my personal experience of using nose breathing when doing high intensity gym classes. IN this lecture I look at nose breathing for athletic performance in general
This may surprise you, but nose breathing has many benefits for dental health and hygiene
How do you breathe when you are sleeping. Don't know? Watch this!
Again this may surprise you - nose breathing has many benefits for cardiovascular health
In this video Dylan Petkus demonstrates a breath exercise that you do 30minutes to 1 hour before bedtime to help you sleep better
Breathing through the nose you make a:
A 5 second count maximum inhale followed by a 10 second count HUM as the exhale
You Cycle through this breathing pattern for 5 (to 10) minutes
He suggests that you do the exercise 30 mins (to 1hour) before bedtime

Health and Performance Benefits. Efficient breathing is linked to improved athletic performance, better sleep quality, reduced stress and anxiety, and potentially easier weight loss. Part of an interview with James Nestor and Tim Ferris
This course explores the advantages of Nose Breathing versus Mouth Breathing and how nose breathing is beneficial for Health, Fitness and Longevity. With the exception of us humans, all mammals breathe just through their noses. As this course demonstrates the nose was built for breathing and the mouth wasn't (the exceptions are laughing and talking).
Nose breathing is associated with activation of the Parasympathetic Nervous system which means nose breathing is important in activities that require a relaxed state of mind and reduced energy expenditure. Mouth breathing on the other hand is connected to the Fight, Flight, Freeze (Sympathetic) part of our Nervous System and is more likely when we are in panic mode.
The course explores the benefits of nose breathing for:
Respiratory Health - the Nasal hairs in the nose act as coarse filters, catching larger particles, dust, and other contaminants before they enter the respiratory tract.
Dental Health - Allows the mouth to look after the teeth and maintain a health aural microbiome
General Health - Nose breathing is associated with Deeper and more rejuvenating Sleep
Relaxation - Nose breathing activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System
Fitness - The nose controls the amount of air we take in and take out and It allows us to extract more oxygen from the air (due to a number of reasons). It also keeps the heart rate lower.
>>> I first learn about the benefits of nose breathing back in 1995 when I read a book entitled 'Body, Mind, Sport' and I immediately started to put mouth breathing consciously into practice when doing High Intensity Exercise. I love strategies for Health and FItness that one can put into practice on oneself (to see the results) and not have to rely on the (so called) experts to tell us what's best. So this course in part is about my 20 years of experience with Mouth Breathing and how this has impacted my general health and wellbeing. <<<
