Course content

9 sections38 lectures7h 3m total length
  • Project settings6:28

Create a new Substance Painter 2023 project using the PBR metallic roughness alpha blend template. Set the mesh to a ball and use 2048 by 2048 resolution with udim options.

  • Navigation3:40

Master Substance Painter navigation: zoom with wheel or alt-right, rotate around the cursor with alt-left, pan with alt-middle, switch 3d/2d/uv views via f1-f4, and toggle perspective with f5/f6.

  • Interface overview6:47

Explore Substance Painter interface, including menus, tools, assets, texture sets, and layers. Learn to customize the UI, bake mesh maps, and manage emissive, ambient occlusion, and UDIM textures.

  • Bake7:57

Bake mesh maps in substance painter to create normal world space, ambient occlusion, and curvature maps at 2048 by 2048, adjust frontal distances, dilation, and antialiasing, then verify results.

  • New bake menu3:29

Explore new bake menu in Substance Painter, using viewport visualization to adjust bake distance, cage, wireframe, and seams on hard edges to prevent artifacts, then bake textures and review logs.

  • Layers7:01

Substance Painter layers system: create paint and fill layers, set base color, work with textures such as color, height, roughness, metal, normal, transparency, and emission, and control visibility and blending.

  • Tools-118:18

Learn brush painting in Substance Painter, switch between mouse and tablet, adjust size, flow, hardness, and spacing, and manage color, alpha, and texture channels with eraser and clone tools.

  • Tools-29:52

Explore stencil and projection tools in Substance Painter, using alpha images as stencils and projecting color with alpha channels, while mastering lazy mouse, symmetry, and radial symmetry for orthogonal painting.

  • Brushes7:36

Explore Substance Painter brushes, from dirt and stitches to animated partial brushes, and learn to adjust color, size, stability, and particle settings for realistic textures.

  • Masks7:20

Master masking in Substance Painter: switch between layer and mask, paint with white or black masks to reveal or hide areas, and refine with brushes and height adjustments.

  • Smartmasks9:30

Learn how smart masks in Substance Painter generate rust and dirt effects, adjust edge wear with curvature, occlusion, thickness, and textures, and edit masks for realistic material wear.

Requirements

  • We will learn everything during the course
  • No knowledge requirements

Description

The course is designed like a coloring book: you will have access to prepared, professional 3D models that we will texture.

There are no timelapses in the course. In all the videos, I explain and narrate every action and keyboard shortcuts in detail.

In addition to the 3D models, you will have access to my Substance Painter files, and you can always take a look at them.

We will start by learning the program's interface, navigation, basic tools, and working with layers.

Then we will begin texturing the prepared models and explore various interesting techniques and approaches.

We will create textures for:

  • Crystals in a cartoon style.

  • A figurine from the "Spirited Away" movie in the Ghibli style.

  • A box for ammunition in a realistic-cartoon style.

  • A glass jar in a realistic style.

  • Human skin in a hyper-realistic style.

  • A goblin character in a cartoon style.

We will also learn how to export textures and import them into Blender and Maya. Two separate videos will be dedicated to this.

We will learn how to bake deformation maps and control textures.

We will cover complex object baking, which consists of separate meshes.

We will learn baking with the assistance of a "Cage" object.

We will learn how to use the Iray render engine, which allows for quick and efficient portfolio image creation, and we will go through all its settings.

We will explore creating smart materials and various texture creation techniques.

I am confident that after completing this course, you will have a high level of proficiency in the program, which can be described as "mastery." See you in the course and in the comments.
