Lomi Lomi massage is unlike anything you’ve learned before. With its long, flowing forearm strokes and full-body rhythm, it creates a treatment that feels more like a moving meditation than a typical massage. It’s deeply relaxing, emotionally grounding, and incredibly enjoyable to give—especially because it’s much easier on your hands and thumbs. In this course, you’ll learn a spa-ready version of Lomi Lomi that you can start using right away to wow your clients, stand out from other therapists, and offer a massage experience they’ll talk about long after they leave your table.

Getting to know your forearms a little for the upcoming techniques is essential, because in Lomi Lomi, your forearms become your most powerful tools. You'll be using them in ways that allow you to glide effortlessly over the body with long, continuous strokes that feel amazing for your clients and effortless for you. This means less strain on your hands and thumbs, better body mechanics, and a massage that feels more fluid and intuitive to give. Don’t worry if you’ve never used your forearms much before—we’ll ease into it step by step, and by the end of this course, it’ll feel completely natural.
For this style of Lomi Lomi massage, it’s best to wear comfortable, professional clothing that allows for ease of movement. Since you’ll be using your forearms quite a bit, make sure your arms are free and your clothing doesn’t restrict your range of motion. When it comes to oils, choose a high-quality, non-greasy massage oil that offers good glide—something like fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed, or a light massage blend. Avoid overly thick or heavily scented oils, as this version of Lomi Lomi is all about flow, comfort, and creating a calming, professional spa experience.

Creating an unforgettable Lomi Lomi massage doesn’t start with your hands—it starts with the environment. Your room should feel like a sanctuary the moment your client walks in. Soft lighting, gentle music, a warm, comfortable table, and a calm, welcoming energy all help set the tone for deep relaxation. You don’t need to go over the top—simple touches like fresh towels, a subtle essential oil diffuser, and smooth transitions between movements make a big impact. Remember, the goal is to create an experience that feels seamless, nurturing, and special—something your clients will associate with youand want to come back for again and again.
Just a quick note
Traditional Lomi Lomi massage is rooted in Hawaiian healing practices and often involves minimal draping, large amounts of oil, and long, flowing strokes that cover the entire body. While beautiful in intention and spirit, the traditional method can be difficult to offer in most spa or clinic settings due to its nudity, oil usage, and space requirements. In this course, you’ll learn a modified version of Lomi Lomi that stays true to its essence—flow, rhythm, and nurturing touch—but is fully draped, uses a manageable amount of oil, and fits perfectly into a professional massage environment. This adaptation makes it practical, accessible, and highly effective for modern therapists and spa clients alike.
Clear communication around draping helps your clients feel safe, respected, and fully at ease—especially when offering a massage style that feels new or unfamiliar. While traditional Lomi Lomi often involves minimal draping, the version you’ll be offering in this course is fully draped and spa-appropriate. It’s helpful to let your clients know this before the treatment begins, so they understand what to expect and can relax into the experience. A brief, confident explanation is usually all that’s needed to reassure them and build trust right from the start.
Before you begin treating clients, it’s essential to understand when lomi lomi massage should be avoided or modified. In this lecture, we’ll go through the key contraindications—both general and specific to massage therapy.
If you’re brand new to massage and feeling unsure about how to set up your space or equipment, don’t worry—I’ve got you covered later in the course. There’s a full walkthrough coming up that will show you exactly how to get started, step by step. You can go to the setup section now or look at it later.
Struggling to get your clients to upgrade from a basic relaxation massage to your lomi lomi massage ? In these upcoming lectures, I’ll share simple strategies that work. You’ll learn how to talk about the benefits in a way that excites clients, how to position hot stones as a value-added experience, and the one mindset shift that makes offering upgrades feel natural—not pushy. If you’ve had trouble getting clients to try something new, this will help turn that around.
The first step to growing your practice is to ensure that every client receives a massage experience that feels truly special and personalized. When clients feel valued and experience outstanding results, they are more likely to return and refer others, creating a win-win situation for both you and them.
One of the easiest ways to elevate their experience—and increase your income—is by guiding them to the most beneficial treatment.
Asking this one simple question and guiding clients toward the right massage isn’t just about increasing your income—it’s about using the power of expectation, trust, and belief to deliver a better experience with better outcomes.
You become not just a therapist, but a guide—and that’s where real transformation happens.
Now, let’s take things up another level. You’ve already learned how to make your clients feel special and give them a more personalized experience. But what if there was a simple way to enhance their results even further—while also increasing your income effortlessly?
This next step is something that many therapists overlook, yet it’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to add even more value to your sessions.
Once you have given them an amazing massage experience which such as the 90 minutes hot stones massage for example, as long as you have gotten all of the other things that I talk about later in the course correct (or most of them), they will be rebooking the same treatment from you because it felt so great! Now, you will have that client as a regular 90 minute hot stones massage client rather than a 1 hour relaxation massage client, or worse-not a regular client at all.
The Next Step to Create a Truly Personalized Experience-The Secret is to use the words by how it makes you feel.
Now that you’ve started tailoring your client’s session to their specific needs, let’s take it one step further. Imagine how much more valued and confident they’ll feel in their treatment when they understand exactly what’s available to them and how it can benefit them.
Most clients don’t actually know which type of massage is best for them—they just book what sounds familiar. But when you take a moment to briefly guide them through their options, they’ll not only appreciate your expertise but also feel like their session is being crafted just for them.
Now we need to practice with the other massage styles and their benefits so that we have everything ready but first remember this!
What are you going to recommend for that client with stiffness when you have several types of massage styles that you could potentially offer and what benefits? Lets look at that now.
There are many ways we can drape our clients while still maintaining the flowing, connected feel of a Lomi Lomi massage. The key is to ensure modesty and comfort while allowing space for smooth, uninterrupted strokes. In this section, we’ll go through several draping techniques that work beautifully within a spa setting. You’ll see how to keep your client fully covered while still creating the signature rhythm and flow that makes this style so unique. Let’s explore the options and find what works best for your space, your client, and your treatment style.
Now let’s go through the massage techniques for the back of the body and highlight the key aspects you’ll need to consider. This part of the treatment sets the tone for the entire session, so it’s important to focus on smooth, continuous flow, balanced pressure, and confident use of your forearms. You’ll also want to pay close attention to your body mechanics and positioning, as these techniques are designed to feel effortless for you and deeply nurturing for your client. As we go through each section, I’ll guide you on how to create seamless transitions, maintain consistent contact, and deliver a Lomi Lomi experience that feels fluid, grounded, and unforgettable.
Before we begin any techniques, we need to apply oil smoothly over the entire back of the body. This sets the foundation for the flowing, continuous strokes of Lomi Lomi massage. It’s important to apply the oil with presence and intention—this isn’t just a prep step, it’s the start of the client’s relaxation. Use long, gentle movements to begin building connection and rhythm from the very first touch.
This is our first technique, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. I call it the Alternating Arm Technique because you’ll be using your forearms in a continuous, back-and-forth motion across the client’s body. It creates a beautiful, wave-like rhythm that feels deeply calming and instantly connects you to your client. As you alternate arms, focus on smooth transitions, even pressure, and staying grounded through your stance. This movement begins to create the signature Lomi Lomi flow your clients will love.
Now that you’ve learned the fundamentals of the Alternating Arm Technique, it’s time to practice with rhythm and flow. In this section, you’ll follow along at a slightly faster pace to help build your coordination, confidence, and body memory. The goal is to maintain smooth, connected movement while keeping your pressure consistent and your stance relaxed. As you practice, focus on letting your body guide the motion—not just your arms—and start to feel the natural rhythm that makes this technique so enjoyable to give.
In this technique, you’ll learn how to massage the back and the arm at the same time to create a feeling of connection and full-body flow. This is one of the things that makes Lomi Lomi so unique—it breaks away from the traditional, segmented approach and treats the body as one continuous whole. By including the arm while working on the back, you deepen the sense of relaxation and create a rhythm that feels expansive and deeply nurturing.
The rhomboids often hold deep tension from posture, stress, and repetitive movements, especially in clients who sit or work at desks. In this technique, we’ll focus on using slow, controlled forearm pressure to melt into the rhomboid area without causing discomfort. You’ll learn how to maintain your flow while offering deeper work that feels therapeutic and connected—never jarring or mechanical. The key here is patience, presence, and letting your body weight do the work.
In this technique, you’ll use both forearms in an alternating rhythm to glide along the erector spinae muscles on either side of the spine. This creates a deeply grounding and soothing sensation while also allowing for firm, consistent pressure without straining your hands. The alternating motion helps maintain flow and balance, reinforcing the signature wave-like feel of Lomi Lomi. Stay relaxed, let your body weight guide the pressure, and focus on smooth transitions from one forearm to the other.
The arms crossover techniques is another nice addition that feels amazing
The Quadratus Lumborum is a key area of tension for many clients, especially those with lower back discomfort or postural imbalances. In this technique, you’ll learn how to work into the QL with mindful pressure using your forearm or elbow, maintaining flow while offering effective, targeted release. The goal is to soften the area without force—using body weight, slow movement, and clear intention to ease tension and support deeper relaxation in the lower back.
This part of the treatment focuses on releasing tension from the arms, hands, and shoulder girdle—areas that carry stress from daily tasks, posture, and emotional holding. You’ll use flowing forearm strokes, gentle stretches, and detailed hand work to bring relief and restore circulation. Integrating the arms and shoulders into your Lomi Lomi sequence not only enhances the feeling of full-body connection but also helps clients feel more open, relaxed, and deeply nurtured.
Whether your client chooses to wear underwear or not during the treatment, your approach should remain equally professional, respectful, and consistent. Draping should always preserve modesty and create a sense of safety, regardless of their choice. Some clients may feel more comfortable keeping their underwear on, while others may prefer the freedom of movement without it—especially in glute or hip work. In either case, clear communication, confident draping, and your own comfort with maintaining boundaries are key. The effectiveness of the massage doesn’t depend on what they wear—it depends on how you adapt and deliver the treatment with care and professionalism.
The back of the legs carries a surprising amount of tension, especially in the hamstrings, calves, and glutes. In this part of the treatment, you’ll use long, flowing forearm strokes to connect the legs into the rest of the body, maintaining the seamless rhythm of Lomi Lomi. As always, your draping should be secure, and your movements should feel both grounding and nurturing. This is your chance to bring flow, release, and a deep sense of balance to the lower body while keeping your own movements effortless and fluid.
Here is the full back of the body sequence for you to practice along with. This flow brings together all the techniques you’ve learned so far—combining rhythm, forearm work, deep connection, and confident transitions into one continuous treatment. As you follow along, focus on maintaining your posture, breath, and smooth movement. The goal is to feel the massage as one fluid, intuitive sequence rather than a series of separate steps. With practice, this will become second nature and one of the most enjoyable treatments you’ll ever give.
It’s now time to begin working on the front of the body. Before we do, a quick word about the back techniques: this part of the massage often feels the most grounding and physically nurturing for your client, and it’s where the connection and rhythm are first established. As you move to the front, your goal is to maintain that same sense of flow, presence, and care. The transition should feel seamless, and the treatment should continue to feel like one continuous experience—gentle, connected, and deeply relaxing from start to finish.
When working on the arms in the supine position, your focus should remain on flow, connection, and gentle, supportive movements. This is your chance to slow things down and bring attention to the hands, forearms, and shoulders—areas that hold tension from daily use and emotional expression. Use long, fluid strokes and gentle mobilization to create a sense of openness and lightness in the upper body. Keep your contact continuous and your transitions smooth, so the client feels safe, supported, and deeply relaxed throughout.
The legs and feet in the supine position offer a wonderful opportunity to ground your client and bring balance to the full-body experience. Using long, flowing strokes along the front of the legs, you’ll continue the wave-like rhythm of Lomi Lomi while gently releasing tension and encouraging circulation. Pay special attention to the feet—they’re often overlooked but hold a great deal of physical and energetic stress. Gentle, continuous contact and mindful pressure here help complete the treatment in a way that feels deeply nurturing and whole.
The neck is one of the most tension-prone areas in the body, and in Lomi Lomi, we approach it with care, flow, and intention. In this section, you’ll learn how to use gentle, supportive forearm and hand techniques to release tension while maintaining the nurturing rhythm of the massage. Your movements should feel fluid and connected, never abrupt or overly clinical. Working the neck with presence and sensitivity not only provides physical relief, but also helps your client fully surrender into relaxation—often marking one of the most memorable moments of the treatment.
If you are wondering, here is why I didn't include that
Now it’s time to bring everything together with the full front of the body sequence. This flow combines all of the techniques you’ve learned—arms, legs, feet, and neck—into one continuous, nurturing experience. As you follow along, focus on maintaining smooth transitions, gentle presence, and a consistent rhythm that mirrors the energy of the back sequence. This is where your massage truly becomes a complete journey—balancing the body, calming the mind, and leaving your client feeling deeply restored.

In every massage session, the first priority must always be to protect the client’s well-being. In this section, we’ll talk about what “Do No Harm” really means in practice, and how to ensure that every technique you use is safe, appropriate, and supportive for each individual client.
Getting honest feedback is essential for improving your skills. In this section, I’ll explain who the ideal person is to practice on and get feedback from—and why choosing the right person makes a huge difference in your development as a massage therapist.
Great massage isn’t about using muscle strength—it’s about using your bodyweight and proper weight transfer. In this section, I’ll show you how to work more effectively and effortlessly by letting your body do the work, helping you deliver deeper pressure without tiring yourself out.
One of the best ways to become a better therapist is to regularly receive massages yourself. In this section, I’ll explain why experiencing massage from the client’s perspective is so valuable—and how it can improve your technique, sensitivity, and overall understanding of what clients truly need.
