Learn to prepare, plan, and execute negotiations using a practical framework that elevates procurement from tactical to strategic, helping professionals thrive in outsourcing, contracting, SRM, and BRM.
Negotiations are an integral part of the procurement lifecycle, not a single event, from internal negotiations with partners to supplier talks on terms, conditions, and contract commitments.
build a solid foundation for procurement negotiations by gathering facts, due diligence, and understanding your financials and goals; align stakeholders and set an extreme opening position.
Prepare for negotiations by aligning goals, gathering facts, and analyzing data through a foundation of preparation, due diligence, and baseline financial modeling, illustrated with a house-buying example.
For procurement professionals, financial modeling is the most critical part of the planning process, revealing cost basis, overhead, and margin to guide negotiations.
Define plan negotiation outcomes, including the most desired outcome, the least acceptable agreement, and the walk-away point, and show how these inform the deal strategy.
Analyze your adversary by mapping their motivations, whether at the individual or company level, and tailor offers such as payment terms to align with their priorities and your goals.
Clarify the negotiation environment to set up for success by defining roles, format, and escalation paths. Organize breakout caucuses and engage senior leaders as needed to close the deal.

Learn to build a fiscal negotiation plan that monitors progress and incorporates items like the NDAA, the FAA, and the banner, while outlining opening requests, concessions, and walk-away points.
Set opening position to shape the negotiation tone; avoid aggressive starts that turn others off and conservative ones that miss what you want, as opening at zero unlocks software discounts.
Build a negotiation plan that uses counteractions, concessions, and red herrings to prepare if-then responses, misdirect the other party, and secure favorable terms.
Plan, strategize, and execute procurement negotiations by controlling the meeting setting, following a clear agenda, and calmly closing deals while staying flexible and memorializing outcomes.
Escape negotiation deadlocks by escalating to direct managers and sponsors, staying agile to counterproposals, and using time and pauses to seek concessions or new options before internal deadlines.
Learn to balance firm stances and strategic bluffing in procurement negotiations, using a take-it-or-leave-it approach to walk away and extract value while preserving credibility.
Learn practical dos and don'ts for procurement negotiations, from keeping conversations with suppliers strictly in the negotiation room, to listening without revealing strategy and enforcing a lockdown period.
Memorialize the negotiated terms in a contract, highlighting key commercials and stakeholder-aligned language, secure legal approval, and present an executive summary to obtain informed consent with no surprises.
Discuss how the ideal negotiator blends analytical, data-driven insight with executive gravitas, collaboration with finance and HR, calm emotion, and clear communication up, down, and across to memorialize outcomes.
Identify common pitfalls that hinder negotiations for procurement professionals, including poor preparation, data-driven gaps, weak management and timelines, communication failures, misaligned stakeholders, and lack of decision authority with suppliers.
Explore how negotiations fit within the procurement lifecycle, cover the foundations, planning, building a strategy, and execution, and identify the ideal negotiator.
Negotiating is tough and every expert has their take on what you should and shouldn't do.
My intention with this course has been to take a Procurement-centric approach to Negotiations that includes plenty of examples. Other online courses are heavily theoretical, but this one leans on my experience leading negotiations for my former employer, Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Sean-Michael Callahan, my long-time friend and fellow Procurement Practitioner, co-teaches this course with me and shares his stories of negotiating hundred-million-dollar deals with some massive suppliers.
We kick this course off with a brief introduction and share our backgrounds so that you can better understand where our experience comes from. In keeping with the Procurement-centric theme, we then talk about How Negotiations Fit Within Procurement.
The course really kicks off with subsequent sections on The Foundations Of Negotiation and Negotiation Planning, the latter of which is the most important aspect of the entire negotiation process, in my opinion.
We have a value-packed section on Negotiation Strategy in which we tell you how to come up with your Best Alternative To Negotiated Agreement (BATNA) and other planned negotiation outcomes. We talk about why it's important to understand your adversary and how you can manipulate your environment to better support your position.
In Negotiation Execution, we talk through the following ideas:
- Escaping Negotiating Roadblocks & Utilizing Time
- Sticking To Your Guns
- Negotiation Dos & Don'ts
- Memorialize The Negotiations
Finally, we'll walk you through the aspects of The Ideal Negotiator before ending things with a brief recap.
Unlike other courses out there, our courses are not theoretical, they contain tons of real-life examples of Procurement in action.
I hope you enjoy the course. Feel free to reach out and connect on LinkedIn once you're enrolled. I'd love to connect!
Cheers,
