Description

Every organization has a hierarchical structure that can cause unequal power distribution. Many employees are more prone than others to pursue this power. And this struggle of theirs is labeled as displaying political conduct in the workplace. Organizational politics (or workplace politics) refers to the objectives of each person inside a corporation and their activities to influence effects, power, and resources and achieve their desired results.

Politics exists inside most organizations. Positive or unfavorable, all employees encounter the effects of workplace politics throughout their lives. Others define it as ascending the career ladder and being productive and efficient at work. In contrast, other employees consider office politics as practices to engage in office gossip or grouping.

By understanding the practices revolving around organizational politics, employees and their managers can prevent themselves from experiencing its toxic effects. This allows them to support their colleagues and prevent their organization from the dysfunctional consequences of office politics. Identifying the negative practices around office politics makes it easier to engage in those political practices that benefit the organization.
