Meet Lauren Morlupo as she introduces her doctoral capstone on musculoskeletal injury prevention through ergonomic training in dental students.
Emphasize ergonomic dentistry by maintaining a natural posture with upright torso, neutral wrists, relaxed arms, and seats that align knees and hips; move throughout the day to prevent musculoskeletal problems.
Assess the high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal injuries among dentists and dental students and apply evidence-based ergonomic interventions, from posture and instrument use to micro breaks, to reduce risk.
Explore evidence-based ergonomic education for dental students, including posture, stretches, nerve glides, and ergonomic assessments to reduce injury and promote longevity.
review four quiz questions on musculoskeletal pain among dental professionals, ergonomic program development by occupational therapists in the dental college, and positive interventions like exercises and alternative hand tools.
Conclude by acknowledging mentors and collaborators who supported the doctoral capstone and invite further questions via email, highlighting occupational therapy integration within university programs.
This course discusses a third year occupational therapy student’s capstone experience at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. The course discusses the background of dental ergonomics, including the need for assessment and intervention. It will also include how occupational therapists are uniquely suited to address ergonomics in the workplace. To further explain, the course includes artifacts and resources completed by the capstone student for this site. Artifacts include fact sheets about dental ergonomics, a formal ergonomic written evaluation, a presentation on the importance of ergonomics, a presentation on stress management, and a presentation on ergo break ideas (stretches, exercises, and nerve glides) for dental professionals. Finally, the course will cover the research study completed during the capstone experience, including the full manuscript. This study focuses on the ergonomics of dental instruments used by dental students.
The course ends with a question and answer section on the topics discussed to allow individuals the ability to enrich their knowledge on the topics shared.
The course is approximately 30 minutes in length. Be sure to check out the resources section for this Udemy course for a more in-depth look at the artifacts presented.
