Welcome to the Moving Through Fear series.
During this really challenging time, we at Learning in Action are doing everything we can to listen deeply to what's needed right now within our communities and what our communities are asking for.
One of the things that we've been asked for are resources for working with fear. So we have created this video series Moving Through Fear to help you work with, name, tame and move through the fear that you may be experiencing and would be so natural to be experiencing at this really challenging time.
As you are going through this course, you will see comment boxes at the bottom of every page, we hope you'll leave all kinds of questions, comments, or thoughts as we love hearing from you!
We hope this video series is useful for you, and if there's anything at all we can do to support you in this time, we want to.
Welcome to Moving Through Fear with your teacher, Alison Whitmire. Our journey together starts with a video segment to share an overview of the course content.
Through this video series you'll learn ways to work with, name, tame and move through fear that you may be experiencing at this challenging time.
Lets begin!
What is Fear?
Fear is an emotion and emotions are a dimension of our experience that has unique information for us. Although, there's not necessarily good emotions and bad emotions, there are definitely pleasant emotions and unpleasant emotions.
Every emotion is a normal experience of this life we live. And we at Learning in Action like to say that every emotion contains unique information and a gift.
In this video and the resources following, we'll explore how to read our emotions more fully and how to receive the gifts they provide.
The Interaction of the Brain and Relationships
In the last video, we talked about fear being an emotion, and it is. And it is experienced first in our brains.
In this video we're going to learn about fear as a neuro-biological process and its response to what's happening when we're in relationship. We'll explore how our brains form and shape to adapt to the people and experiences in our lives.
The Importance of Naming Fear
Fear, like a lot of distressing emotions, can be sneaky, and it can kind of skulk outside of our awareness. If we don't learn to name our distressing feelings, it impacts our body, physically, it impacts how we engage with people, and we're oftentimes not aware of it.
Sitting with Fear
This video is about sitting with fear and we'll be doing that through a guided meditation.
So I invite you to meditate with me. You might find an undistracted place as much as you can and find a comfortable seat. With your feet flat on the ground you might close your eyes and begin to tune into your breath. Let's begin...
Taming Fear
"I must say a word about fear. It's life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary. How I know well. It has no decency, respect, no laws or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, finds it with unerring ease." Yann Martel, Life of Pi
In this video we'll explore these 5 questions for each of your key fears...
What is the worst that could happen?
On a scale of 1 to 10, how bad is that?
How likely is that scenario on a scale of 0 to 100?
What is the opportunity this situation represents?
How can I capitalize on this opportunity?
The Journey From Fear to Love
If this time has taught us anything, it's that we can't control ourselves, much less other people or what's going on in the world. So how do we be with that and what can we do?

How do we work with fear in the face of great uncertainty?
Learning In Action’s Heal The Divide series continues with Moving Through Fear, an of-the-moment, interactive, on-demand course designed to engage your innate capacity to understand, accept, move through and use your experience of fear to your benefit. This course will help you develop an understanding of fear on an emotional, neuroscientific and developmental level. In addition, you will learn the steps you can take to name, tame, sit with and move through fear into a place of acceptance and possibility.
This video series is intended to help you tune into yourself, identify your experience in these challenging times, and move through that experience to release whatever may be blocking your natural capacity for wholeness, ease, and creativity.
We invite you to join Alison Whitmire, President of Learning In Action, on this exploration.
