Description

Welcome to Module 5. This course is part of a complete 20-module Real Digital Marketing training programme. Each module can be taken individually or as part of the full series.

In this module, we focus on an important principle that is often misunderstood in business: marketing is not the first step in building a successful product or business. In fact, marketing is the fifth step. Many businesses make the mistake of jumping straight into advertising, particularly on platforms such as Google or Meta, simply because it is easy to launch campaigns. However, if the foundations of the business are not properly established first, even the best marketing campaigns can struggle to succeed.

One of the most common reasons businesses fail is not because of poor marketing, but because the steps that come before marketing were not properly addressed. This module explains the four essential steps that must take place before marketing activity begins.

The first step is identifying an unmet need in the market. Successful products and services usually solve a real problem or fulfil a genuine demand. Without understanding this need, businesses risk creating something that customers simply do not want.

The second step is developing a concept. Once a need has been identified, businesses must develop a clear product or service concept that addresses that need in a meaningful and valuable way.

The third step is determining a price that the market is willing to pay. Pricing is not simply about covering costs; it is about understanding perceived value and what customers believe the product or service is worth.

The fourth step is gaining distribution and understanding how the product or service will reach customers. Even the best ideas require a clear pathway to market, whether that is through physical distribution, digital channels, partnerships, or direct sales.

Only once these four steps are properly understood does marketing become the fifth step: building awareness and communicating the value of the product or service to the market.

The purpose of this module is to help you understand why marketing should not be approached in isolation. When the earlier stages are properly developed, marketing becomes far more effective because it is supporting a product, price, and distribution strategy that already makes sense.

By the end of this module, you will understand how marketing fits within the wider business process and why successful marketing campaigns are usually the result of strong foundations that were built long before any advertisement was ever launched.
