Learn a step-by-step, real-time approach to turning raw tracks into a big, emotional mix in Pro Tools, covering compression, saturation, parallel compression, mic bus inserts, and practical tips.
Create a Pro Tools session for had a feeling, set 48 kHz and 32-bit headroom, import stems by copying audio into the session, and organize 53 tracks for edits.
Start with the song’s biggest section to achieve a strong static mix, balancing levels and panning for headroom, a wide stereo image, and to avoid clipping.
Prioritize the lead vocal to sit on top, using reference tracks to gauge vocal presence. Define mid-range ownership, like electric guitar, and start with the low end to prevent muddiness.
Blend bass via direct injection and amp with gentle sub compression to glue notes, balance the low end, and tighten the rhythm section using see eye to eye.
Balance rhythm guitar tones by shaping midrange and low end with EQ, cut muddy frequencies, and add air with a touch of high end to unify Marshall and Fridmann tones.
Copy the rhythm section's aq curve as a starting point for the outro. Balance body and mid-range across Friedemann and Marshall guitars, then automate the solo for cut through.
Boost the acoustic top end with eq, compress harsh transients with a fast attack 4:1 1176-style compressor, then add an exciter for sparkle to blend energy without overpowering the mix.
Shape vocals by shaving the low end and using a hardware-style compressor, then boost top end to strengthen presence and reduce mid-range buildup in a static mix.
Learn how to sculpt vocal balance with targeted EQ and compression, removing mud around 450–600 Hz and boosting highs, using bus compression to bring energy to vocal in the mix.
Apply EQ to lead and backing vocals in Pro Tools, copy settings between tracks, emphasize high and mid frequencies, apply compression, and automate levels for the outro to boost energy.
Learn to use parallel compression on drums to add ambience, sustain, and playfulness by sending all drum tracks to a stereo bus, blending with subtle gain reduction for punch.
Compress the overheads to bring up the quieter hi-hats and ride, using a 2:1 ratio with fast release to keep snare transient and make the drum mix cut through.
Adjusts bass phase to thicken the mix, uses polarity flip and a bass crushed track with overdrive to add edge, and blends with drums for a rock bass tone.
Apply a light mix bus compression to glue drums, guitars, and vocals together without overdoing it. Use a trusted bus compressor with fast release and an ultra-fast attack for consistency.
