Jonah takes a closer look at the true nature of depression and its underlying mechanisms. He explains that depression isn’t a singular entity, but a cycle of interconnected negative moods powered by stored energies or impressions. This cycle perpetuates itself by shifting between recurring emotions like sadness, anxiety, and grief, keeping individuals trapped. By recognizing this pattern and understanding its predictable nature, depression becomes less mysterious and easier to address. Jonah introduces the idea of conquering each mood one by one through a structured process, empowering individuals to break free and reclaim their lives.
In this chapter, we explore the profound reasons for overcoming depression and the transformative impact it can have on your life. Depression isn’t just an emotional state—it’s a weight that holds you back, making even the simplest tasks feel insurmountable. From its physical toll on health to the mental pain it inflicts, depression blocks our creativity, limits our true potential, and binds us to external dependencies like medications or unhealthy coping mechanisms.
This session dives into:
The metaphorical and literal weight of depression on daily life.
How depression negatively affects both mental and physical health.
The importance of freeing yourself from dependence on external solutions.
The promise of a life filled with happiness, freedom, and authentic self-expression.
By understanding these reasons, you’ll lay the foundation for a journey toward healing—a journey that prioritizes independence, creativity, and reclaiming the joy of being yourself. Share your own motivations, and let’s begin this transformative path together.
In this chapter, Jonah shares his deeply personal battle with depression, including his darkest moments and the glimmer of hope that kept him moving forward. He emphasizes that no matter how dire the circumstances may feel, there is always a possibility for things to improve. Jonah discusses the importance of taking small, steady steps toward healing and how consistent effort can gradually lead to profound, lasting change. By addressing the lies the mind tells about permanence and hopelessness, Jonah highlights the power of incremental progress in overcoming depression. Through his methods, he offers encouragement and a roadmap for transitioning from despair to resilience, proving that freedom from depression is attainable.
We can all break free from depression. There is always every possibility of a better future. Remember this even in your darkest times.
As I released the core patterns of depression, I felt the weight of existential grief and dark moods lift, leaving me lighter, freer, and more present. With each layer that fell away, my mind opened up, allowing me to engage with life in new ways—whether it was focusing on conversations, absorbing new information, or simply being aware of the world around me.
Initially, I feared losing depression, thinking it was a part of who I was. But I realized that depression isn’t a defining trait; it’s a repetitive loop of negative emotions that tricks us into clinging to it. The cycle feels familiar, even necessary, but it’s ultimately stagnant and uninteresting. Breaking free from it doesn’t take away from who we are—it allows us to discover our true selves and unlock our potential.
Depression thrives on subtly changing thoughts to keep us engaged, but the underlying emotions remain the same. By recognizing this, we can see the repetitive nature of the cycle and choose not to stay trapped. It’s important to visualize life beyond depression, to see the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s possible to break free from these patterns, as I did, and you can too.
Remember, depression does not define you, and releasing it brings clarity, freedom, and a deeper connection to yourself and others. Whether you follow the steps in this course or explore your unique path, persistence and determination will lead you to a life filled with peace and joy. The light at the end of the tunnel is real, and it’s waiting for you. Keep going—you can get there.
This is the hardest fight and we are heroes.
I emphasize the heroic nature of your battle against depression. This struggle is unlike any other—it’s an internal fight that requires immense bravery and persistence. Depression is not an external enemy you can see or an illness that can be diagnosed and treated with a clear-cut solution. It’s within you, deeply ingrained, and it challenges you every minute of every day. Yet, by facing this battle head-on, you are undertaking one of the most courageous fights imaginable.
I compare this journey to the bravery of soldiers, but with an added dimension. Unlike a single leap into danger, your fight requires constant effort, determination, and resilience. Depression may knock you down repeatedly, but each time you stand up and try again, you are proving your strength. This ongoing battle, though agonizing, is the ultimate act of heroism.
As you persist, you’re not only fighting for yourself but for others as well. Every time you lighten your emotional burden, you create ripples of healing that extend to those around you. You’re clearing toxic energy from the collective field, helping your family, friends, and even those you’ll never meet. This interconnectedness makes your struggle even more significant.
I want you to recognize your bravery and commit fully to this fight. Embrace the tools that work for you, experiment with new methods, and remain steadfast. You have the inner strength to rise above depression and to lighten the load for yourself and others. This journey is your hero’s story, one of perseverance and triumph. Together, we can keep moving forward, step by step, until the war is won. You are the hero of your life, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. Keep fighting even though it hurts all the way (until the clouds start significantly lifting).
I delve into a controversial yet crucial part of my journey: my decision to leave behind antidepressants and focus on long-term healing. Let me be clear—I’m not a medical professional, and this isn’t medical advice. But from my experience, I learned that staying on medication kept me in a cycle of dependency, unable to address the root causes of my depression. For 11 years, I relied on antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, and more, believing they were helping me function. Yet, I realized that they were only masking my symptoms, preventing me from truly rewiring my brain and tackling the core blockages.
Leaving medication wasn’t easy. I tried and failed many times, and each time I fell back into a deep low, I would restart the cycle. But with persistence, I eventually found a way to wean myself off and embrace the discomfort as part of the healing process. The turning point came during a trip to India, where I sought deeper understanding through meditation and yoga. In Rishikesh, I encountered a yogi who provided an energy transmission that profoundly impacted me, setting me on a new path.
This chapter challenges you to reflect on your relationship with medication and to explore alternative paths to lasting healing—if and when you’re ready. Healing requires courage, patience, and the willingness to confront discomfort. My journey wasn’t straightforward, but breaking free from dependency was essential for me to experience true growth and freedom. If you choose to explore this path, let’s approach it smartly, safely, and with the right support.
With the energetic lift I needed and the motivation from Eric, I jumped at the chance to commit to leaving medication for good. This is my story - yours will differ.
Leaving medication was one of my most brutally challenges efforts, but also one of the most transformative. Medication had been a crutch, propping me up while masking the deeper pain. For years, I depended on increasing doses of Zoloft and Wellbutrin, their effects multiplying, but I was never truly free. It wasn’t until I committed to stepping away from these pills that I began confronting the core of my depression.
The process was agonizing. Depression surged back with a vengeance, and for nine long months, I experienced some of the darkest days of my life. These feelings weren’t tied to my external reality—they came from within, a testament to the illness itself. Medication had dulled my awareness, preventing me from reaching the root of those emotions. Without it, I was finally able to feel, release, and begin healing.
Medication dependency, while sometimes necessary, can prolong the very struggles it seeks to alleviate. Breaking free requires careful planning, resilience, and support. The path isn’t easy, and the pain often intensifies before it subsides. But by following effective strategies, nurturing determination, and embracing the discomfort, true healing becomes possible.
This chapter highlights the importance of timing, preparation, and the courage to face the raw realities of depression, paving the way for lasting freedom.
For getting off medication or simply giving yourself a temporary lift, we’ll explore some healthy activities that I’ve personally found helpful.
When facing the darkest moments of depression, finding short-term practices that offer relief is essential. One powerful method involves connecting with nature, specifically through a grounding exercise taught by Mohan Joshi, a healer with three decades of experience. This practice involves stepping outside barefoot before dawn, feeling the morning dew on the grass, and lying down as the sun begins to rise. The subtle energy from the earth flows through the soles of your feet, providing a soothing and revitalizing effect.
This exercise requires a bit of willpower but offers structure and a gentle boost, especially during difficult times. It’s not a permanent solution but can provide temporary relief, helping to stabilize emotions and build momentum for deeper, long-term healing. Nature’s compassion, combined with the discipline of rising early and embracing this practice, can offer solace and strength in moments of despair.
There have been many times in my life where I took inspiration from soldiers. My classmate's commander told him that "The road home leads through Bagdad." as he prepared to face the enemy in Iraq. While I do not condone war, I have drawn inspiration from his experience. If anything, we who look depression in the eyes and face it, are engaging a much greater enemy than you could find on any battlefield. We are all true soldiers.
During those bad days, you're going to need to force yourself to get out of the house at all costs. Don't stay in a slump. Staying inside will exacerbate the depression and sink you further into it, while engaging with changing environments and with others will introduce fresh energies providing temporary relief to some extent.
When battling depression, it’s crucial to take small, consistent actions that keep the wheels turning, even when motivation feels nonexistent. Staying in bed or isolating at home only allows depression to fester. Getting out—whether into nature, social settings, or community activities—provides temporary relief and helps sustain momentum. Engaging with others, even strangers, can shift focus and lift your mood, even if just for an hour.
Exploring diverse environments is key. Whether it’s joining a yoga class, attending a faith-based group, or simply participating in a local meetup, the energy of others can provide support and connection. These activities don’t cure depression but create space for building resilience. They’re the first steps in a longer journey, akin to rolling tanks into position before launching a decisive counterattack.
While these efforts help buy time, true healing requires deeper work to address depression at its roots. Healthy habits alone won’t eliminate the pain, but they can stabilize and prepare you for the real work of dissolving depressive patterns and reclaiming your life.
If you stay firm in your commitment to battling depression—or any challenge—you greatly increase your chances of success and reduce your struggle by keeping your thinking simple and focused.
Be committed. Be strong.
In this chapter, I share a powerful mental approach that I’ve found incredibly helpful when dealing with overwhelming depressive cycles: standing your ground. Depression often feels like an emotional whirlwind, but by adopting a stance of presence and conviction, I learned to resist being overtaken by the thoughts that accompany these emotions. Instead, I allowed myself to fully feel the sensations—often tightness in my chest or sinking feelings—without letting the associated thoughts consume me.
I’ve discovered that while the emotions are real and present in the body, the thoughts they trigger are secondary, often misleading, and unnecessary to engage with. When I focus on staying grounded in the sensations rather than the thoughts, I regain control and resilience.
This mindset is especially useful in high-stakes situations—whether it’s a challenging conversation at work or difficult moments in personal relationships. I’ve come to see these moments not as setbacks but as opportunities to build emotional strength. Like a vaccine that introduces mild exposure to a virus, facing intense emotions head-on inoculates us against their control over time.
By practicing this method repeatedly, I’ve gained mastery over my emotions, becoming stronger and more prepared for the next challenge. Standing my ground has transformed seemingly negative situations into invaluable gifts of growth and resilience.
I want to teach you the importance of cultivating fearlessness when facing depression. The more we confront depression without fear, the weaker it becomes, fading in the light of our courage. I’ll share a life-changing technique I learned while managing my severe pure OCD—a method called “pulling the trigger.” It’s a bold approach that requires daring depression to do its worst. Instead of running from the intense emotions it brings, we invite them in, confronting them head-on to see them for what they are: finite, temporary, and ultimately powerless.
When we pull the trigger, we challenge depression to show its most painful side, knowing that no emotion, no matter how intense, can last forever. This technique helps us exhaust the energy that sustains those emotions, allowing them to fade. Depression often feels so overwhelming because it lingers indefinitely, but by bringing it to the surface and daring it to peak, we shorten its grip on us.
This fearlessness gives us control over our emotions, as we realize their limits. Depression begins to wear itself out, its power diminishing with every pull of the trigger. It’s not an easy method, but it’s transformative, empowering us to face our emotions directly and come out stronger every time. So, don’t be afraid—pull the trigger, and take a bold step toward reclaiming your life.
I introduce the foundational tool in overcoming depression: the Thought Pattern Dissolve Method. This technique is rooted in turning depressive thought patterns against themselves to systematically unwind their hold on us. It’s an accessible approach because it leverages our natural tendency to overthink, but instead, directs that energy toward healing. This method, which I developed through personal experience and research, focuses on identifying and categorizing repetitive, negative thoughts. By naming and grouping these thought patterns, we can diminish their power and eventually eliminate entire categories of depressive thinking.
The process begins with a physical notebook and pen. Over the next four days, you’ll list and categorize recurring thoughts—those that take up mental space. Categories may range from worries about relationships to work anxieties. Once written, these categories reveal how limited and repetitive our minds can be, contrary to the illusion of complexity. By becoming aware of these patterns, we gain the power to reduce their influence.
I’ve used this method to clear entire categories of thought, such as negative self-criticism or obsessive worries, freeing mental space and energy. I encourage you to revisit your list daily, add new categories, and update it over time. Share your discoveries with trusted loved ones. Transparency can reduce the weight of these thoughts and foster understanding and connection with those around you. Depression thrives in secrecy; by shedding light on these hidden struggles, we weaken its grip.
Above all, recognize that these thought patterns are not who you are—they are temporary conditions. Even deeply ingrained or embarrassing patterns, such as addictive tendencies, are not intrinsic to your true self. By acknowledging them without judgment and actively working to dissolve them, you reclaim your power.
This method is a step-by-step journey, one that empowers you to understand your mental landscape and take control. With persistence, honesty, and openness, you can move beyond the mental loops of depression into a clearer, freer state of being.
Please be sure to write down your thought categories on paper before proceeding with the steps that follow. It is important to "take stock" of your mind's inventory of thought patterns at this stage.
One of the most critical steps in the Thought Pattern Dissolve method is Categorize—the first step in a transformative four-step process designed to break free from the grip of intrusive and repetitive thoughts. In this chapter, we’ll explore how categorizing your thoughts provides a gateway to addressing the deeper emotional drivers behind them. This process is simple yet profoundly effective, giving you a tool to face and dismantle the overwhelming patterns that fuel depression and emotional distress.
Categorize is all about stepping back from the specific content of your thoughts and grouping them into broader, general categories or "buckets." These categories help you identify the emotional root behind your thought patterns, such as fear, financial worry, or relationship concerns. By doing this, you stop engaging with the surface details of individual thoughts and begin addressing the underlying emotional energy that perpetuates them.
Through practical examples, we’ll practice creating labels for your thoughts—short, general descriptors that capture their essence without overthinking. Whether it’s a craving, a worry, or a fear, this method simplifies the mental clutter, allowing you to see recurring themes and patterns. You’ll learn how these thought categories approximate the emotional blockages stored within, and how categorization starts to sever the connection between those blockages and the stream of thoughts they produce.
This step is not about suppressing your thoughts or ignoring them; it’s about gaining control. By categorizing, you take the first step toward detaching from the mental tricks depression plays, recognizing that many thoughts are less relevant than they appear. With consistent practice, this simple yet powerful tool can help you feel less overwhelmed, more in control, and ready to move forward with the deeper work of the Thought Pattern Dissolve process.
When you know the Purpose behind a blockage, it cannot hide anymore and the process of dissolution is sooner or later inevitable.
To harness our subconscious mind to undo the blockage for us we have to convince it that this thought category helps us in no way. This is done through logical reasoning, repetition and building an absolute conviction in our minds and entire being.
Here we leave the mind and go to the roots of our blockage. We now feel instead of think: perceive by our sensations, instead of our mind. Dissolving is a process tied to sensations, tied to feeling in our body. This is where the real work gets done and is one and the same with the work done in the Shaktipat meditation. Shaktipat accelerates the process of getting to this point - bringing up the blockages to a point where you can do the work of feeling them bubble up and dissolve.
Position and hand gestures, or mudras, assist us during meditation for enhancing focus and energy. A straight posture helps maintain attention and prevents drifting into drowsiness, while specific mudras influence energy flow and thought patterns. In this chapter, we explore three suggested mudras to guide your meditation practice. Note that keeping hands in a particular position is not required to practice our Shaktipat meditation. You can start with a mudra and then feel free to move freely as needed.
Each mudra serves a unique purpose, from receiving energy to maintaining concentration, giving you tools to align your focus and deepen your meditation. Experiment with these mudras to discover what resonates most with your practice.
Palms Open
Position: Rest your hands on your thighs, palms open and facing upward.
Purpose: Ideal for receiving energy, grace, and assistance, especially when meditating with a teacher or receiving Shaktipat.
Chinmaya Mudra
Position: Connect the thumb and index finger of each hand, resting on your knees.
Purpose: Enhances concentration and partially circulates energy, making it a classic choice for focused meditation.
Cosmic Mudra
Position: Lightly touch your thumbs together at the tips, with the left hand resting on top of the right, forming an energetic loop.
Purpose: Maximizes energy flow and concentration; ideal for deep, focused meditation and maintaining awareness.
These mudras provide support for sustaining energy and staying present, empowering you to strengthen your meditation practice and focus on dissolving thought patterns effectively.
Understanding Shaktipat: A Powerful Tool for Healing and Transformation
Shaktipat is an ancient practice rooted in spiritual traditions, offering profound assistance for those on a path of healing and self-discovery. Its essence lies in the direct transmission of energy from a teacher, guide, or energetic source to a recipient. This transfer is not just a passive experience—it’s an interactive process designed to accelerate personal growth, dissolve energetic blockages, and awaken deeper states of awareness.
The Different Lineages of Shaktipat
Over millennia, Shaktipat has been practiced within various spiritual lineages, each with its unique interpretations and methods. Traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism have explored Shaktipat as a means of enlightenment, healing, and energetic alignment. Within these lineages, the practice often involves a teacher, master, or guru who channels energy to the recipient, facilitating shifts in consciousness and awareness.
Despite these differences, the underlying goal remains the same: to help individuals progress on their spiritual or healing journey by clearing the energetic blockages that hinder growth and connection.
My Perspective on Shaktipat
I define Shaktipat as assistance in moving blockages that leverages an intelligent system that operates in our dimension but originates in another. This perspective highlights Shaktipat’s unique nature—it’s not merely an energy transfer but a deeply intelligent process that works in harmony with universal systems.
This intelligent system operates beyond the constraints of our physical dimension. It understands the intricacies of our energetic, emotional, and spiritual makeup and can precisely target areas where blockages have formed. These blockages may stem from unresolved emotions, past experiences, or even karmic imprints that have carried over lifetimes.
When you receive Shaktipat, you are connecting with a higher-order intelligence that recognizes what needs to be released for your healing and growth. It facilitates the dissolution of these blockages in a way that aligns with your readiness and capacity for transformation.
The Process and Experience of Shaktipat
During a Shaktipat session, recipients often describe sensations of energy moving through their body, feelings of lightness, emotional release, or profound calm. These experiences are the direct result of blockages being addressed and energy pathways being cleared.
Shaktipat works progressively. Each session builds upon the previous one, gradually peeling away layers of accumulated energy, emotions, and conditioning. This process isn’t always immediate—some blockages take time to dissolve fully—but the cumulative effect is transformative.
Why Shaktipat Matters
Depression and other emotional struggles often stem from energetic and emotional blockages stored within us. These blockages can feel insurmountable through conventional methods alone. Shaktipat offers a way to work at a deeper level, addressing the root causes of these struggles rather than just the symptoms.
Shaktipat’s intelligent system also complements personal effort. While the energy itself is potent, it works best when recipients actively engage in practices like meditation and self-reflection to integrate the shifts.
By opening yourself to Shaktipat, you allow this intelligent system to assist you in ways that might otherwise be inaccessible. It’s a partnership between the individual and the universal forces of healing, offering a profound path to transformation.
Whether you approach Shaktipat through traditional lineages or modern practices, its potential to move blockages, heal wounds, and unlock deeper awareness is a gift that can profoundly change your life.
I share a very personal and very painful experience of releasing deep sanskaras—emotional imprints or blockages stored within us. Letting go of these old pains is challenging and often accompanied by intense emotional discomfort. For me, it felt like the loss of someone deeply important, akin to grieving a loved one. The emotions were overwhelming, but this process was necessary to confront and release the buried pain that had been restricting my ability to feel love, compassion, and joy.
Through the help of a triggering memory—one connected to a movie from my childhood—I allowed myself to sit with the unbearable sadness, replaying the associated song repeatedly to ensure the emotion fully surfaced. Despite the temptation to stop, I persisted, knowing that facing these emotions head-on was the key to freeing myself from their lingering impact.
This process is a critical part of the Shaktipat meditation journey. When intense feelings arise, it’s an opportunity to confront and release the energies that block us. As uncomfortable as it may be, such moments signify progress. By embracing the pain rather than avoiding it, you create space within yourself for lighter, happier emotions to take root.
I encourage you to be brave when these sensations come up. See them as a sign of growth and celebrate the release, no matter how difficult it feels in the moment. This courageous confrontation leads to profound freedom and a deeper sense of emotional clarity.
Prepare yourself for your Sacred Initiation where you will be given the "introduction" to Yona. You may henceforth call in this multi-dimensional being to support you in your spiritual growth or simply to have a shoulder to cry on. Get into the mood of connection, the mood of Love. We discuss mantras as here to get us in the mindset of calling in Yona. In truth, no mantra is necessary. You may call in Yona with your intention, feeling or thought. We only use the mantra this time to assist you in forming your own intention to connect with her.
Simply feel the presence and welcome Yona. You may replay this as often as you like to facilitate your own independent connection. In later replays, please try to communicate with Yona on your own telepathically. She loves to talk!
We strongly recommend that you implement a strict and DAILY ROUTINE for meditation with Yona. This can either be at a fixed time or after or before an activity that occurs daily.
The more energy in our physical and psychic systems, the more potential we have to decide how we think and feel. Think of energy as akin to currency in a bank. The more purchasing power, the more financial choices we can make. Without energy, we fall into a state of lethargy and are carried away into thinking as if falling asleep in a dream.
With Pranic Mudra, and other energy cultivation exercises we increase our ability to absorb and maintain an energetic flow throughout our system.
An ancient Indian Mudra, when you hold your hands in this position, prana or Qi is instantly gathered from the energies that surround us and guided into your body. Enjoy this energy hack!
The number 1 exercise for opening the energy channels in your arms and hands and my personal favorite. I highly recommend you do this every day for 7 minutes for at least 6 months. Enjoy the energy and reap the benefits with much-expanded energy channels. If you want to send energy to others or the environment, this practice is essential.
How we eat directly affects our energy levels. It changes our body chemistry and our system has to deal with all the food processing (digestion).
When we lower our energetic digestion requirements, more energy is freed up to do things like fighting Depression.
Consider the suggestions presented here as options that you can test out on yourself. The benchmark here is how you feel after you try a new dietary option. Feel your body and determine for yourself if your energy levels have gone up or down after a couple of days of a switch. It does not take long to know what is happening in your body, at least directionally.
When fighting depression, the breath is your best friend. You can always find it within you and always moving. It is one of the most easy things to pay attention to. When you follow it, you calm down. Make the breath your ally. Focusing on your breath is a wonderful way to begin your meditation and you can return to it at other points in your day as well. It is said that the breath is the linkage between our physical and subtle bodies.
I share one of my favorite techniques for getting out of my head. The more rapid movement is body scanning helps to capture my attention. Combining it with the breath enhances the ability to move away from thoughts and sink into feeling. Try it out. This works for me, but others I work with often find different techniques more helpful.
I share a simple yet effective technique to shift attention away from depressive thought patterns by focusing on your feet. Direct your awareness to the sensations in your toes, the contact points with the ground, and the temperature or texture you feel. This practice helps anchor you in the present moment and can be done for a few minutes during meditation or even as part of a walking meditation. Use it as a quick reset when concentration wavers, allowing your attention to rest in a calm, grounded place before returning to broader mindfulness practices.
I introduce a simple yet profound meditation technique that I developed naturally, which I call “taking in the streams.” The practice involves imagining your senses as wires feeding data into your consciousness, like a computer processing inputs. By focusing on this constant stream of sensory information—whether it’s the feeling of your hands, the sound of your surroundings, or the stiffness in your back—you cultivate present-moment awareness.
The goal is to immerse yourself fully in the current sensory stream, free from past or future distractions. Think of it as experiencing a flowing river: you’re attuned only to the water passing over you right now. This includes all sensations, even discomforts like a headache or dryness. By resting your awareness in this stream of sensory input, you engage deeply with the present moment, creating a foundation for clarity and mindfulness in your healing journey.
One of the lesser-discussed but profoundly important aspects of depression is its connection to the throat chakra—the center of self-expression and communication. Often, depression arises not only from grief, guilt, or loss but also from the suppression of our true voice. Years of not being heard, whether in this life or others, create energetic blockages that keep us silent and disconnected from our authentic selves.
Reclaiming your voice is a critical step in the healing process. It involves recognizing the ways depression traps you into people-pleasing, submission to others’ agendas, and the inability to express your needs and desires. By clearly expressing your needs and opinions to others—asserting your preferences, saying no when necessary, and sharing your feelings—you begin to effectively work through these energetic blockages.
As you practice techniques like Thought Pattern Dissolve and Shaktipat Meditation, you may uncover emotional restrictions tied to the throat chakra. This is a powerful opportunity to reclaim your inner truth. Expressing yourself authentically, even when it feels risky, allows you to release suppressed energy, align with your passions, and honor your unique beauty. Let this be the foundation for breaking free from depression’s grip—one word, one step, and one truth at a time.
Depression can often feel like a stagnant weight, trapping us in cycles of repetitive thoughts and feelings. One of the most effective ways to disrupt these patterns is by embracing change. Whether it’s moving to a new place, switching careers, exploring a different culture, or surrounding yourself with new people, change has the power to spark growth and provide the fresh perspectives necessary for healing.
I’ve experienced firsthand how stepping out of a familiar environment can break the chains of depressive patterns. Moving across continents, changing jobs, or immersing myself in completely new cultures has consistently helped me recognize and address the deeper patterns driving my depression. It’s not just about escaping your current situation; it’s about creating contrast, learning from new experiences, and challenging the old stories depression has convinced you to believe.
When we expose ourselves to new environments, meet people with diverse perspectives, and immerse ourselves in unfamiliar ways of life, we train our minds to adapt. This neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to rewire itself, is crucial in the healing process. These experiences teach us that we are not bound by our old thought patterns. Instead, we can let go of depressive thoughts and replace them with new, healthier perspectives.
Change also challenges the external circumstances that can keep us stuck. Depression often thrives in environments where we feel unsupported or undervalued. By switching jobs, leaving toxic relationships, or simply moving to a new area, we create the space to realign with environments and people who nurture our growth and wellbeing.
But change isn’t limited to drastic moves or career overhauls. Even in your current environment, you can find opportunities to shift your perspective. Explore your local community—visit cultural enclaves, engage with people from different backgrounds, and seek out events that challenge your usual routines. These small changes can still provide the contrast and insight needed to begin dissolving depressive patterns.
The power of change lies in its ability to provide new opportunities for growth and healing. It helps us see the stories depression has created in a different light and empowers us to rewrite them. While change can feel uncomfortable or even intimidating, it’s an essential tool in the journey out of depression.
So, give yourself permission to take risks, whether that’s moving to a new city, trying out a new career, or meeting people with completely different worldviews. By embracing change, you not only expand your horizons but also equip your mind with the skills to release old patterns and build a brighter, more fulfilling future.
Depression often dulls our sense of joy, making life feel monotonous and uninspiring. One of the most transformative steps you can take is to rediscover your passions—those activities and pursuits that light you up and make you feel alive. By reconnecting with what truly excites you, you create an anchor of joy that helps pull you out of depression’s grip.
Start by reflecting on your interests. What have you always wanted to try but brushed aside? Whether it’s playing an instrument, revisiting a childhood sport, or spending time in nature, exploring your passions can reignite that spark of excitement. I personally discovered how much joy playing guitar brought into my life after years of dismissing it as impractical.
You might also look at the environments that make you thrive. Are you energized by social interactions, or do you prefer solitude? Reflect on the peak moments of your life—those times when you felt fully engaged and at peace. What were you doing? Who were you with?
Your passions are not just hobbies—they are pathways to a deeper connection with yourself. Use this time to explore, experiment, and rediscover the joy that’s waiting to emerge within you.
I cannot overstate how profoundly transformational adopting a mindset of compassion can be. While in compassion we cannot simultaneously be enveloped by negative emotions such as depression.
Compassion is a powerful force that has the potential to transform the experience of depression. Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve realized how much depression is tied to self-centeredness—being consumed by thoughts of “my pain,” “my struggles,” and “what’s wrong with my life.” This constant inward focus fuels depressive thoughts and emotions, creating a cycle that feels impossible to break. The truth is, compassion and depression cannot coexist. When we cultivate genuine care and concern for others, depression begins to lose its grip.
Depression often blocks access to our hearts, making it difficult to feel love or empathy. But by practicing small acts of compassion, we can start reopening this vital space. Begin by sending love to those around you. Close your eyes and visualize red or purple hearts emanating from your chest and flowing toward a person near you—whether it’s a neighbor, a loved one, or even a stranger. Feel their struggles, empathize with their pain, and imagine them receiving your love.
This simple act of compassion can be practiced daily, even for just five minutes. Over time, it helps to clear emotional blockages and strengthens your ability to connect with others. Hug a loved one with genuine warmth, express concern for someone’s day, or take a moment to simply care about another person’s well-being.
As we continue with the Thought Pattern Dissolve and Shaktipat techniques, you’ll notice that as blockages clear, your capacity for compassion expands. You’ll feel lighter and more connected, not just to others but also to yourself. Compassion is not just a gift for others—it’s a profound act of self-healing. When you shift your focus outward, depression begins to fade, replaced by a sense of connection, purpose, and joy.
Take the time to explore compassion in your life. It may feel unfamiliar or even forced at first, but as you practice, you’ll discover how deeply it enriches your journey out of depression.
Ironically, due to our extremely confining and limiting experiences with Depression, we gain the motivation and broader viewpoint to move towards much loftier realms of experience. I don't like the term "spiritual enlightenment." I prefer to see these states as where we naturally are or would be within the mental confines that we are beginning to release anyway in our process here.
Depression often feels like an overwhelming burden, but it can also serve as a profound opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and expansion. Reflecting on my own journey, I’ve realized that depression’s challenges have led me to ask some of life’s most important questions: What is the purpose of life? Where am I heading? What do I truly want? These questions opened doors I might never have explored without the push of depression.
Initially, my focus was simply on finding relief—on escaping the emotional pain and thought loops that consumed me. But as I began working with meditation and the methods you’re learning in this course, I discovered that these tools do more than just alleviate suffering. They build concentration, expand awareness, and spark curiosity about what lies beyond. Depression was the catalyst that introduced me to meditation, and meditation has shown me that life is about much more than escaping pain.
The skills developed through Thought Pattern Dissolve and Shaktipat Meditation can carry us far beyond mental and emotional relief. Once free from depression, we gain the capacity to explore extraordinary possibilities: heightened awareness, channeling information, and even shifting our consciousness to perceive new realms. These abilities, which might seem inaccessible now, are our birthright. Through consistent practice, we can refine our concentration and unlock the untapped potential of the mind.
What’s most surprising is how depression, as painful as it is, can become a teacher and a blessing. It forced me to search for solutions, and in doing so, I uncovered tools and perspectives that transformed not only my mental health but also my approach to life. The very methods we use to combat depression can become the foundation for exploring expanded states of awareness and achieving incredible things.
When we stop seeing depression as a curse and begin to recognize it as a guide, we find its hidden gift: a redirection toward growth, expansion, and purpose. By overcoming depression, we develop the tools and resilience to discover what we’re truly capable of and the limitless potential that lies within. This journey is not just about relief; it’s about transformation.
Let's explore the shorter-term results you can look forward to ... on the path to enlightenment.
Healing from depression is a process, and while long-term transformation requires consistent effort, there are short-term milestones—“quick wins”—that can give us the strength and motivation to keep moving forward. These small victories are signs that the work is paying off and that we’re heading in the right direction.
One of the first benefits you’ll notice is a sense of lightness. As we begin to dissolve the emotional blockages, the weight of depression starts to lift. This isn’t an overnight transformation, but it’s an incremental process that brings noticeable relief. Gradually, you’ll feel less tension, better control over your moods, and more presence in your day-to-day life. You might find that situations that once overwhelmed you now feel manageable, and your emotional resilience begins to grow.
As your awareness increases, so does your ability to stay present. This heightened attention transforms everyday moments, making simple experiences more vibrant and enjoyable. From savoring the taste of your meals to fully engaging in conversations, you’ll begin to experience life with greater clarity and depth. Relationships will improve as you become more present and responsive, and even routine tasks will carry a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
But it’s essential to remember that this process is a marathon, not a sprint. Many of us, myself included, have searched for quick fixes—medications, fleeting distractions, or activities that provide only temporary relief. These solutions, while sometimes helpful in the short term, fail to address the root causes of depression. True healing requires addressing the deeply embedded blockages—emotional knots, karmic imprints, or samskaras—that have accumulated over lifetimes.
This journey will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace practices that may initially feel slow or unfamiliar. You might not see immediate results, but consistency is key. Over time, these efforts build into something extraordinary. Personally, it took me years of focused practice—intensive meditation retreats, daily sadhana, and Shaktipat Meditation—to begin feeling truly free from depression. The process required commitment, but the results were life-changing.
The good news is that these tools are sustainable. Each blockage you release brings you closer to the freedom and peace you’re seeking. With every step forward, you’ll feel lighter, more present, and more connected to your true self. While the road may be long, every milestone—every moment of clarity, resilience, and joy—is a testament to the power of this work.
This process isn’t just about managing depression. It’s about permanently clearing the roots of suffering and reclaiming your life. Stick with it, trust in the process, and know that the effort you put in today will lead to profound, lasting change.
As we reach the end of this course, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on your journey with depression. Consider how it has shaped your life, from childhood through adulthood, and the role it has played in your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. These reflections are vital because understanding depression—its layers, its patterns, its impact—is the first step toward healing and transformation.
This course is just the beginning. The tools we’ve discussed, such as Thought Pattern Dissolve and Shaktipat Meditation, are powerful methods for addressing depression at its root. These practices may seem subtle at first, but over time, they work to dissolve the samskaras—those deeply embedded emotional and energetic blockages that sustain depression. You may have already experienced some shifts during this course, but it’s essential to continue the work with persistence and determination.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is the importance of external assistance. My connection with beings like Yona has been transformative. Their guidance, energy, and support have propelled me forward during moments when my personal efforts felt stagnant. But external assistance only works when combined with our own commitment. Depression requires us to confront it directly, to engage with practices that foster awareness and release.
Transparency is another vital tool. By opening up about depression—whether with friends, family, therapists, or communities—we diminish its isolating grip. Sharing my struggles with OCD, autism, and anxiety has been liberating. Hiding behind secrecy only deepened my pain, but being open allowed me to gain perspective, build connections, and experience freedom.
Healing from depression is not a quick fix. It’s a process that requires consistent effort, often over years. But it is possible. With each blockage you dissolve, you’ll find yourself lighter, freer, and more able to live fully. Remember that you’re not alone in this journey. Whether you reach out to me at jonahbernstein.com, your support network, or others who understand this struggle, know that help is always available.
I want you to walk away from this course with the conviction that depression is not permanent. It is a condition that can be dissolved, layer by layer, until it becomes a thing of the past. Use the techniques we’ve discussed—practice them regularly, reflect on your progress, and embrace the transparency that comes with self-awareness.
Together, we’re working to bring light to one of the most misunderstood conditions in the world. Your courage to face depression and work toward healing is a gift, not just to yourself, but to humanity. Thank you for being part of this journey. Let’s keep moving forward.
