Mindfulness: How to Do It
Mindfulness meditation practice couldn’t be simpler: take a good seat, pay attention to the breath, and when your attention wanders, return.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
It’s not all in your head—you can practice mindfulness by sitting down for a formal meditation practice, or by being more intentional and aware of the things you do each day.
How to Practice Mindfulness on the Go
Nearly every task we perform in a day—be it brushing our teeth, eating lunch, talking with friends or exercising—can be done more mindfully.
When we are mindful of our actions, we pay more attention to what we are doing. It’s the opposite of going through the motions—instead, you are tuned into your senses, noticing your thoughts and emotions.
By building mindfulness into your daily life, you can practice mindfulness even when you’re too busy to meditate.
Singing bowls are bowls used to promote relaxation. They produce sounds and vibrations when hit or circled with a mallet.
Those sounds and vibrations are supposed to help you relax. Some people say they can also help:
lessen pain
improve sleep
reduce anger
improve blood pressure
improve respiratory rate
reduce depression
improve general well-being
Sound therapy in general is an ancient practice. Singing bowls have been used in Tibet and neighboring areas for religious and spiritual ceremonies, as well as meditation.
Tratak, literally translated, means to gaze. Tratak is a tool to remove the disturbances of the mind. It is a simple yet powerful tool. A practitioner of Tratak has to fix his/her eyes on an object. This object can be the flame of a lamp, candle, a Shiva Linga, or a black dot on the wall.
This technique makes use of the underlying connection between the mind and the eye. This connection has been well documented in clinical studies. When we fix our gaze on a particular object, without moving our body, our mind becomes stable. This is the underlying principle of Tratak which helps in reducing stray thoughts.
Benefits of Tratak meditation
Any meditation practiced regularly will give you benefits. However, the practice of Tratak is so particular that it brings with itself some specific benefits as well.
As the practice of Tratak works on the connection between the eye and the mind, the biggest benefit is seen in our optic region. Regular practice of this meditation purifies the eye and it also strengthens the eye muscles. Many practitioners have shared that their vision also improved after regular practice.
The consistent practice of Tratak improves the mind’s concentration power and ability to focus for longer periods of time. This is especially beneficial to children. As your focus and concentration improve, you will find that your memory power also improves gradually.
With so many distractions at the tip of our fingers, the problem of insomnia and irregular sleep has become quite prevalent in the current generation. Tratak streamlines the thought processes in the mind, allowing it to switch itself off easily, thus helping you regularize your sleeping patterns.
In the scriptures and stories, greater focus has always been correlated with great vision and powerful determination. The practitioners of Tratak have often exclaimed that, with time, they develop the ability to visualize, experience enhanced intuition, and stronger willpower.

Mantra is a Sanskrit term, with “man” meaning “mind” and “tra” meaning “release.”
Think of a mantra — a word or phrase you repeat during meditation — as a tool to help release your mind. It can make a lot of difference, especially if you have trouble concentrating or getting in the right frame of mind.
Many people find that using a mantra can boost awareness and improve concentration. Since it helps you stay focused, it could lead to improved results from meditation.
