Philip hatchet headman, Western Kentucky University golf coach, covers the short game from 100 yards in, including putting, chipping, sand play, softening up shots, and lob and flop shots.
Master putting fundamentals by aligning shoulders, keeping a quiet posture, gripping palms facing one another, and placing the ball forward of center, with a consistent back-and-through stroke for distance control.
Master the short game by preserving loft through impact, using hinge and hold and the putt chip method to land on the front edge and roll toward the hole.
Learn a hard pan shot technique by opening the blade, keeping the toe digging into the dirt, and using a steep outside swing to elevate the ball.
Master bunker shots by opening the club face, widening the stance, and accelerating through the sand to let the bounce lift the ball out cleanly.
Master the flop shot: a high lob with a wide U-shaped swing, no wrist cocking, and an open clubface to land softly over bunkers.
escape deep rough by keeping the club four to six inches behind the ball, feel grass resistance with practice swings, and choose a safe shot to stay in play.
Master the short game by avoiding wrist flick at the bottom and keeping your chest down, so the ball rises naturally; take your time and practice hard.
