While thoughts play a vital role in our daily functioning, certain recurring thoughts can be detrimental and limit our progress. Beliefs form a significant part of our thoughts, representing ideas that we hold to be true. Beliefs have the potential to both benefit and hinder us, as they may stem from personal experiences, inherited from others, or influenced by societal norms. It's important to recognize that some of our beliefs may be false.
In our society, there is a prevalent expectation to be self-critical and hard on ourselves. We constantly compare ourselves to others and strive for validation and approval. When we fall short, we tend to criticize and belittle ourselves. Moreover, we allow external forces such as employers, partners, and family to determine our worth, leaving us feeling inadequate. However, it's essential to understand the concept of value. The most challenging realization is accepting and believing that we inherently possess value, regardless of our career or life circumstances.
Many people spend more time at their jobs than with their friends and family combined, making it understandable why they closely associate their self-identity with their work. However, it's important to recognize that our jobs don't define who we are or determine our worth unless we allow them to. While jobs are necessary for survival, striving for a separation between our identity and our job can lead to a healthier perspective.
Being willing to challenge your beliefs is crucial, as it can lead to surprising revelations. It's important to understand the interaction between your brain and beliefs. Your brain is naturally inclined to seek information that supports and reinforces your existing beliefs. However, the good news is that you have the power to change your beliefs over time. Each time you modify your belief, your brain will support it by seeking evidence, enabling you to harness its power to your advantage.
There are things in this world that we have control over, things we don’t have full control over but can influence and things that we have no control over. You may hear this described sometimes as your sphere of influence and in this lecture we'll talk about how you you use it to help you gain perspective in your job hunt.

To manage shame, practice self-compassion, separate your self-worth from the job search, seek support from trusted individuals, challenge negative self-perceptions, and reframe shame as a tool for personal growth.

To avoid becoming fixated on a single opportunity and feeling devastated if it doesn't work out, use a technique called opportunity stacking. By having several possible opportunities on the go, you become less dependent on any one of them working out, increasing your chances of finding employment.
