Every workplace has risks.
Some are obvious. Others may be hidden, until it’s too late.
That’s where continuous risk assessment comes in.
This course will teach you how to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and take practical, effective actions, every single day.
And we’ll do it using global best practices that apply across regions—from the United States to the United Kingdom, from Canada to Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.
We begin by answering a simple question:
What is continuous risk assessment?
Unlike traditional risk assessments, which may be done once a year or only during major changes, continuous risk assessment is ongoing.
What does this mean?
Well. It happens every day, as part of normal work.
It’s based on the idea that hazards don’t wait for your next safety meeting because:
Conditions change
People rotate
Equipment wears down
And, risks can appear without warning.
In this lesson, let’s look at the three main types of risk assessment, and how they work together.
Understanding the difference will help you apply the right method at the right time.
Before we start assessing risks, we need to prepare properly.
Like any good safety practice, preparation is half the job done.
A well-prepared risk assessment is faster, more accurate and much more useful than an ill-prepared one.
Now that we’ve prepared, it’s time to begin the actual risk assessment.
And, step one is identifying hazards.
Now that you’ve identified the hazards, the next step is to ask who could be harmed and how could they be harmed?
This step is all about people.
You are not just listing dangers but connecting them to real individuals doing real work.
You’ve identified the hazards and the people who might be affected.
Now it’s time for Step 3, to evaluate the risk and decide what precautions are needed.
This step is where you figure out how serious each risk really is and what should be done about it.
At this point, you have performed the following:
You have identified the hazards, and worked out who might be harmed.
Then you have evaluated the risks and chosen the precautions to be taken.
Now it’s time to put it all on record. here's what you have to do.
Welcome to Step 5. The final step in the risk assessment process.
This is where you will review and update your risk assessment as is necessary.
You’ve identified hazards, evaluated the risks, taken action and recorded your findings.
But here’s the truth. Workplaces change and so do the risks.
That’s why every risk assessment needs to be reviewed regularly.
Implementing Control Measures. This is where safety becomes real.
It’s not just about paperwork. It’s about protecting people through clear, practical steps.
You have identified the hazards, evaluated the risks, chosen the best control measures, and put them in place.
Now what? Now comes one of the most important parts. The Follow-up.
Welcome to this practical tutorial on completing a HIRA form. This document is essential for any effective workplace safety program and knowing how to complete it properly is a crucial skill for safety professionals.
In this lesson, I'll walk you through each section of the form, explaining what information goes where, and demonstrating with a practical example from a manufacturing environment.
We’ve covered a lot together.
You’ve learned what continuous risk assessment is, how it fits into the bigger picture and how to apply the five-step process.
From spotting hazards, to following up after controls are in place, you now understand how to stay alert to everyday risks, use the hierarchy of controls, choose practical precautions, and take meaningful action to protect yourself and your team.
