Ok, now I really want you to have done everything that I have said to set yourself up and get things moving. Don't worry so much about the website just yet if you don't have one. The other steps are more important to get organized first.
There are also various ways to earn money in the massage industry. I have done them all and I want to talk about the pros and cons of each of them and also how you can do several of these, like I did, to get more business.
This course is really about working for yourself but maybe perhaps you are just not ready to do that and would prefer to work for someone else and learn from them and have the added security .
Let's take a look now at working for yourself and the ways that this can be achieved.
This is how I started. It is the cheapest way to get started, you do not have to give anyone a cut of your income like you would perhaps in a clinic. However, there are a few things that you need to be wary of.
Here is another brilliant way to start cheaply and you don't even have to leave the house!
This also can be a great way to work cheaply but there are things that defiantly need to be considered as I found out.
This really made my life stress free when I first got started. I had regular companies every week so I knew that I had regular weekly income coming in from week to week.
This is what I did and it was a great way to blend all three especially when I first got started. It was a great way to do lots of treatments, get the word around and make good money with very little outgoing costs or set up fees.
Owning your own business. Now you can make a living and if you want to sell it then you actually have a tangible business to sell. There are more costs and risks setting this up though which I go through.
You can also buy a ready made business that someone else has built up but be very very careful.
It is really good that you do a cost analysis. Here is a very simple way to do it and give you a ballpark figure of what you will need to get started and be successful without putting yourself under huge stresses.
Now is the time, if you are just getting into massage, that you need to ask yourself these questions to work out which path is right for you at this moment in time.
Now we get to the real game changing part.
This is where you take your massage therapy practice to a whole new level!
This may be a basic lecture for some of you but as you know, first impressions are everything and it all starts with answering the phone. Here is what you should and shouldn't do.
Now the client finally gets to meet you in person so it is important that you are bright, energetic and don't fall into these traps that I have seen other massage therapists do.
Here is an intake form which I think is a good outline to work on. Just remember to add the box at the bottom of the page that says something like " Please tick the box if you would like to be on our gold star VIP list to receive discounted treatment and specials" (or something similar to that)
Now, you have seen the intake form, asked some questions and it is time to do your evaluation. Make sure that it only takes a minute or two at the most. If it takes too long you need to practice it more.

I will give you an example of roughly what this should sound like. Please use your own words that feel comfortable for you. You will need to practice this.

Now that you have done your evaluation and your massage, you are now going to give your professional opinion to your client based on the evaluation and the massage and your recommendations for their follow up treatment based on those findings.
You will need to practice this so that you know what and how you are going to say this to your clients in your own words.
It is important that you give them postural advice when needed which will help their pain and tension between now and their follow up treatment. By sitting, standing and walking in better posture it will take the strain off their muscles and joints and they will get better more quickly. Even if they had no pain, and came in for a relaxation massage, it is still important that good posture is used because poor posture is one of the main causes of muscular imbalances..if not, THE main cause.
I would almost always get my clients to do this between treatments. It will help with their pain and muscular imbalances as they work the trigger points, tight muscles and spasms and will not only feel great for them, to do but they will also get better and help their muscular imbalances become better balanced more quickly.
Once again, helping them with this advice is really important. We need to get them to have better posture to help the strain and continual stress on their muscles, ligaments and joints.
I suggest that you read this document so that you will be more educated on the incredible benefits of simple exercise. The reason this is so important for the musculoskeletal system is that simple exercise such as walking will make them feel a world better. The more you can get them moving if they are sedentary, the better. They will feel so much better and thank you for it.
This should be a short email to your new client and welcome them to your spa and let them know that you are here for them if they need anything. They can call you on your personal number or email you, whatever is easiest for them.
Also, it is a great way to explain the benefits of regular massage and also give them more knowledge about their specific condition.
Here is something that I put together that will give you an idea about how you could inform your client more on their condition and how you work and why you work in this manner.
I cannot begin to tell you how important this is. Can you imagine how amazed and special they will feel that you took the time to do this? Once again, it shows that you are not only incredibly professional in everything that you do but you are also caring and genuinely concerned for your clients.
Now that you client is arriving for their second massage session with you, here is what you need to do.
Let me show you roughly how that would sound with a client. Again, use whatever words you like that you are comfortable with.
This is what I would do if someone is in a lot of pain based on my professional opinion.
Once again, show that you are observant and can tell when someone is walking better or doing better. It goes a long way to showing once again that you are an expert in your field. Just make sure that you can tell and are not guessing and get it wrong. That would be embarrassing.
And now, after their second treatment with you, you now want to book them in for around 4 more massage sessions to help with their muscular imbalances more to get them in a healthier more balanced state.
The client need sot be educated that even though they may not be in pain, it is still really important that the postural and muscular imbalances are addressed. If they are still in pain, then maybe you recommend twice a week for the next two weeks. Use your professional judgement.
So now lets go through all of the steps to see where we have come from. This is a totally new skillset that you are going to have to practice like any new skill but it will not take long. As I have said, practice it again and again until you are completely comfortable and know what you are doing so that the evaluation is quick and your recommendations from your professional opinion are smooth and clear.
Now not everyone will be onboard and may say no thanks which is fine.
Remember, that your job as a caring, honest, professional massage therapists is to:
simply evaluate them to check for muscular imbalance and postural distortions that can affect their health and can cause pain, tension, spasm and many other problems
give the massage therapy session to the best of your ability giving more concentration to the specific areas of tightness and/or pain based on the evaluation and what you feel during the massage.
Then after the massage you will simply recommend, that they come back so that you can follow up on them and give another massage to further help their pain/tension/muscular imbalance/posture imbalances etc.
You will also give them postural advice to do, plus use them tennis ball on the tighter areas or painful areas. You will recommend they do some daily exercises if appropriate.
Your job is to evaluate, educate and recommend from your professional opinion - just like any Doctor, Chiropractor, Naturopath or Osteopath would do.
When you start treating your clients like this you will need to hone your skills. The change in your clients will be immense, they will be healthier and happier because you are taking care of them from your honest caring professional opinion as their massage therapist.
You are treating and advising from your heart.
It will change not only their vision of you from someone that did massages to now as health care professional in muscular therapy.
You will look after your stable of clients and your business will grow and grow.

Don't forget that EVERYTHING has to be done correctly and professionally.

Your conduct in the clinic is extremely important as the professional massage therapy expert, it also has to be outside of the clinic as well.
This is one thing that so many people get wrong and they lose potentially thousands of dollars by losing clients simply by not following these basic rules. This is what you do to gain a lot more clients and earn thousands of extra dollars from something as simple as this. It costs nothing and takes less than one minute to do.

This does not have to be done immediately but put it on your list of things to do when you get a chance. It can be done for free or by using fiverr.com or upwork.com
Think about what doctors wear. what physiotherapists, Osteopaths and chiropractors wear. They dress to impress. They were clothes that are professional and comfortable. They do not wear shorts and a t-shirt . Nor should you. What you wear must also tell the person when they see you that you are a massage professional and not some hippy that smokes grass and works on the beach giving massages in torn sweaty clothes and dirty fingernails. Ooze professionalism in every respect.
This may seem like something that you would not have to give much thought into, but I beg to differ. As you will see, certain names can have a detrimental effect. Choose wisely.
You can start sending videos to your clients on mail chimp, your facebook page and on your blog. People love to watch videos and actually prefer to watch a video than read off the page.

If you are serious about building your youtube channel these guys have all that you need to become successful.
This is a key to keeping your clients in a blissful state. If you do not do what I recommend here, then you will most likely not see that client again, and they will probably be telling their friends not to come. Remember, the majority of people do not complain, they just chalk it up to experience as a bad massage experience, or at the very least-annoying, and not return...and you will never know why.
Here is a key to having happier clients when they walk out of your clinic. This is something that they will really appreciate. you do not want people feeling self conscious when they walk out of your place after a massage, especially if you work in a busy area where there are lots of people.
This is one of those keys to making the person's massage experience better that may not seem like much but I promise you, they will be so much more relaxed and get much greater benefit from your treatment by doing this.

I used to have them made then wrapped them in a plastic bag and I also made cute little labels for them. I would use them on the client and have them in the massage clinic and recommend them to them if they had pain. My clients loved them and they last for years.
I has 2 sizes. One that is about the shape of an A4 piece of paper which is great for the lower back, knees etc and another one that was sausage shaped that would be great for the person to hang around their neck whilst watching TV.
They are very inexpensive to make, clients love them and of course, you also make money from them.
There is a very good reason we need to stop saying this. It is untrue. What happens is that by saying this, we no longer look professional and educated. This still gets taught in massage schools all around the World and so let's please start changing this. It just harms our industry. The more professional and educated that we are, the more respect we get as practitioners and so does the massage industry as a whole.
Here is something that everyone seems to have an opinion on without any research backing their claims. Once again, let's give educated advice to our clients and they will be really impressed with your superior knowledge over other practitioners.
