Description

Learn the foundations of traditional gilding techniques used in icon painting.

This course focuses entirely on the process of gilding — one of the most characteristic and symbolic elements of traditional iconography. Although it can serve as the fifth part of the complete Mandylion – The Holy Face of Christ course, it has also been designed as an independent course that can be followed separately.

In these lessons, you will learn how to prepare the surface for gilding, how to work with traditional materials, and how to apply gold leaf step by step. The course explains both the technical and practical aspects of the process, helping students understand how to achieve clean and harmonious results while avoiding common mistakes.

Particular attention is given to patience, precision, and understanding the role of light and reflection in iconography. Gold in an icon is not treated as decoration alone, but as an important visual and spiritual element that supports the presence and harmony of the image.

The lessons are designed in a calm, accessible way, making the course suitable both for beginners and for students already practicing icon painting who want to deepen their understanding of gilding techniques.

By the end of the course, you will understand the complete basic process of traditional gilding and feel more confident working with gold leaf in your own icons.

Who this course is for:

  • Icon painters who want to learn traditional gilding techniques.
  • Beginners interested in working with gold leaf in sacred art.
  • Artists who want to expand their knowledge of traditional decorative techniques.
  • Anyone interested in the practical and symbolic role of gold in iconography.
