  • Understanding Common Organizational Daily Dynamics1:13
  • Understanding How to Improve yourself ( SURVIVOURSHIP BIAS)4:38

Here you will learn about ,Survivorship bias is a form of selection bias that can lead to overly optimistic beliefs because multiple failures are ignored, such as when companies that no longer exist are excluded from analyses of financial performance. It can also lead to the false belief that the successes in a group have some special property, rather than just coincidence (correlation "proves" causality). For example, if three of the five students with the best college grades went to the same high school, that can lead one to believe that the high school must offer an excellent education when, in fact, it may be just a much larger school instead. This can be better understood by looking at the grades of all the other students from that high school, not just the ones who made the top-five selection process.

survival bias or immortal time bias is the logical error of concentrating on the people or things that made it past some selection process and overlooking those that did not, typically because of their lack of visibility. This can lead to incorrect conclusions.

  • Fundamental Principle of Business Acumen7:05

    WHAT IS BUSINESS ACUMEN ACTUALLY

Business acumen is a difficult to define combination of forethought, creativity, and agility that is a key factor in setting successful business professionals apart from their less accomplished peers. But it doesn't just come from experience. It has to be cultivated and nurtured.Business acumen is strategic thinking. It's focused communication. An orientation toward action. It's insight. Keenness. Quickness. It's all these things together and more. It is, quite simply, a most desirable sales competency.

In any successful business, there are individuals whose achievements stand out from the crowd, people with a knack for success. Entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Warren Buffett come to mind. This is not the result of fate or good luck. The distinguishing factor in the achievements of such people is their business acumen. An individual with business acumen views the business with an executive mentality. They understand how the moving parts of a company work together to make it successful. They're able to see the big picture of the organization, how the key drivers of the business relate to each other and work to produce profitable growth. In that context then, business acumen can be understood as the readiness and ability to make sound strategic decisions. It expresses itself in three prominent characteristics.

First, business-savvy individuals are given to exercising forethought, considering the future implications of their decisions. People with strong business acumen are able to create strategic plans that meet company objectives, anticipating and planning for a broad range of factors that might impact the business. They perform thorough due diligence by gathering information, recognizing possible risks and solutions, and selecting the best course of action. Buffett made his fortune through a series of smart investment decisions, exercising all aspects of forethought to decide whether the company should take a short position on stocks or go long. The second characteristic is the capacity for creativity.

Many business situations require quick inventive thinking. Creatively navigating the unexpected is a valuable business skill. Consumer behavior, technological advances, and politics can influence a company's strategy, and all can be unpredictable. Responding to unexpected situations, business-savvy leaders identify creative opportunities for improvising to their benefit. Consider Steve Jobs again. In developing the iPod, Jobs was able to take the functionality from various devices already in existence and combine them into a new product that surpassed the capabilities of all others available at the time. And then he continued to improve and evolve it. Both forethought and creativity play into the third characteristic of business acumen, adaptability.

You can also refer to it as agility or flexibility. But by any name, adaptability is key to business success. Things don't always go according to plan. Businesses face change daily. Someone with business acumen understands the implications of change and new developments, and adjusts plans and strategies accordingly to keep their company competitive and reposition it for success. The ability to adapt is evident throughout the career of successful businesswoman and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey. While perhaps most widely known for her role in hosting a TV talk show, Winfrey parlayed her initial success into a vast multimedia empire, adapting and changing to social and media changes over the course of decades. Making shrewd business decisions isn't exclusively the provenance of a select few. The characteristics of business acumen, forethought, creativity, and adaptability can all be fostered and developed. Successful business leaders aren't born that way, they are grown.
