In this lecture I explain the basic concept of modes. Beginning with explaining what a key is, and leading on to how the chords within a key can be organised into modal chord progressions. There are examples of chord progressions in all of the usable modes, and explanations of why each mode is what it is. You also get a chart which shows all of the modes in every key.
This session deals with the Ionian mode... we look at how to play lead guitar using the Ionian mode. I explain how to take the pentatonic scale patterns that you are (hopefully) familiar with and include additional notes which will enable you to play lead guitar using the full Ionian mode. You also get a close-up video demonstration of a solo using this mode, as well as a TAB of this solo & a jam track to try out for yourself.

This final session summarises the content we've looked at. From knowing what chords are in a key, to understanding how this relates to a the modal aspect. Also we reinforce the ideas we've covered on adding notes into pentatonic scales to create modal scales to solo with. Just in case you have any problems with note awareness (understanding the note content of what you're doing) there is a guide to how to figure this stuff out. You also get all the scale patterns you need and an additional 6 jam tracks (as well as their chord progressions) to figure out what mode each of them are in & jam over.
I have also added a PDF that came with the original version of this course (and was briefly mentioned in the description of this version of the course on my website). It is just a text & pictures version of the info that (in this version) is delivered by me talking to the camera. It might be useful to have it written down, as was pointed out by a student, so you can now download it.
This course explains & demonstrates the, often misunderstood, concept of modes for the rock guitarist. You will get all the information you need, as well as scale diagrams, jam tracks, demonstration solos containing plenty of usable licks & guitar tabs. Everything is explained in an accessible & relaxed manner, with a minimum of jargon.
