Module 1: Understanding the Digital age of Uber

Many people these days are looking for an interesting way to start a new career or to supplement their existing income as a way to cover extra household expenses or pay off their student loans or sock away money for that long-awaited tropical vacation. Whatever your reason for working is, you have decided that under no circumstances will you be spending any time in the cubicle or working hours.

Managed by someone else you must have a job where you get to set your own hours, and more or less be your own boss jock like these are usually hard to come by, as they usually involve being an entrepreneur starting your own company and working very hard for a few years to get your company off the ground. If however you want to have the working freedom of an entrepreneur without the stress of running your own company. You may want to consider driving for Uber.

Uber is a one-of-a-kind mobile phone application based "taxi service" that is more akin to a rideshare, then using the services of a traditional taxi cab company as the Uber app has made everything digital from electronically hailing a ride to paying the fare for the trip. Everything is taken care of for by using your smart phone, as an Uber user. You can even watch your ride travel to you. Thanks to the GPS features in the app.

This of course emanates the need for dispatchers, and wondering whether your ride is going to show up, and even the need to carry cash to pay for your fair making finding a ride much easier and more reliable. Uber itself has nothing to do with the drivers in the sense that they do not own the vehicles that the drivers are using and the drivers are not being paid by who were directly to provide transportation services, this is where the "rideshare" aspect comes in.

Think of it this way. When you were in college somewhere on your campus, there was a bulletin board that listed everything from free couches to someone looking to share a ride home and help pay for gas. This is exactly what the Uber application does.

It serves as a bulletin board, linking together. People looking for a ride and willing to pay for gas with those people willing to do the driving, you could also think of Uber as a transportation co-op and because Uber does not actually supply any of the vehicles or drivers, and they make their money through advertising and charging small fees to both the individual doing the driving and paying for the ride.

They are nothing more than a highly advanced tech company with a very interesting social media app. The company was founded in 2009 by Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp. The original intention was to use the apt that they had created to start a premium black car service however.

They quickly saw the potential and possibilities for ride sharing, and the revenue that could be generated, and this particular service. Soon became a huge part of their revenue, launching them into global fame as the unorthodox transportation gurus.

So in other words, if you have a vehicle and don't mind driving other people where they need to go, then you can make money as an independent transportation specialist using the Uber application to be put in touch with those who need a ride in your city. You can make money, driving to a man you are going to run anyway, all while getting acquainted with the new and interesting person.

Signing up for Uber is a fairly easy process that may vary slightly depending on your city of operation but should be something similar to:

going to Uber.com (the official website) entering your zip code into the appropriate box being redirected to the regional website specific to your area of operation answering a few questions such as how many people. Will your car, accommodate, if it is six or more.

Then you will be part of Uber XL. If you have a bigger cars such as an SUV limousine, you will be part of Uber XXL (using this designation requires a commercial drivers license and insurance). Most people however will be part of Uber X., which is the standard and the lowest paying aspect to the driving service as it allows drivers to use their standard vehicle as long as it will hold a minimum of one other person.

Once you have filled out the appropriate information for choosing your official Uber designation from X. to XL to XXL (the names now go from X. to SUV). X. is still the standard and most prevalent basic partnership, XL is for the driver with an SUV that sits six people aside from the driver, Uber black car is just as it sounds. This is the luxury market; you will need a vehicle with a black exterior and leather seats (you should also check your area of operation.

As many areas are no longer accepting Lincoln town cars or Chrysler 300s). There is also Uber taxi, which is self-explanatory. After you have chosen to your Uber designation, you will then need to provide Uber with proof of insurance and ownership of a vehicle and then be submitted to a background check of your driving record and criminal and/or law enforcement record.

The registration process for Uber may take up to seven days to process your account and verify your driving and insurance records. However, once a driver has been verified in their account will go live. And they will be allowed to use the Uber app to begin sharing rides.

It's important to remember that Uber drivers and/or partners as they are known are independent contractors, meaning they do not expressly work for Uber itself and can come and go as they please, if a driver only wants to work one hour a month. That is perfectly fine, no one's going to come hunt them down and make them drive more.

The same goes for if a driver registers and then only drives for a week at which point they decided that driving for Uber is no longer a cup of tea, they can be finished. Almost instantly. The contract will be ended. The act will be removed from their phone, and they are no longer a driver.

The only caveat to not being attached to the company will of course be if a driver chooses to rent a cell phone from Uber for the purpose of conducting business as the driver will be charged for rent on the phone, whether they are driving or not, so if a driver finishes driving permanently. Then they should turn their phone in as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary expenditures.

It is also important that the Uber drivers understand the rules and regulations concerning their city of operation. For instance Uber in New York City are required to have commercial driving insurance and a license before they can contract with the company is also important to note that a driver cannot download the Uber driving and/or navigation app until they have officially been "activated" and officially passed the background and driving record check.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be 21 years of age or older
  • Applicants must have had a valid driver's license for at least 1 year.
  • Clean Driving Record
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Be insured on the vehicle you intend to drive
