In this video I show you how to measure yourself and then how we adjust the pattern to make it fit any size or shape.
Let's have a look at what you need to make your own Kimono or yukata.
A basic sewing kit is all you need but I will show you some tools I use that make things a bit easier.
See how to cut Fabric A. This is the wider fabric 140-150cm / 55-60" wide.
See how to cut Fabric A. This is the narrower fabric 110-120cm / 43-47" wide.
Get your pattern pieces ready for construction. We do this now because of the way the garment is put together. Feels a bit strange? It will, we use a different work flow with this garment and you will see why when it all comes together.
We mark the body and sleeves now that we have dealt with the raw edges.
Getting these ready now will make the project smoother as your Kimono comes together. You will feel the benefit of finishing your Kimono and already having the sash done, this is a mighty feeling!
Centre back seam goes up in a second.
Mark this before we attach the front overlaps. Everything is flatter now and easier to work with.
Line up the hems and work from there. The hems lining up are the important part here.
Take your time. Start in the centre and work out from there down each side one by one. This part takes the longest and takes as much time to complete as making the whole rest of the garment. Take your time and press well.
Congratulations, you should be proud, only question now is...what fabric to use for the next one?!?!?!
See my favourite gowns that I have made and learn from me. Take inspiration with fabric choices and ways of lining and backing your garment.
