Introduction to Ren'Py. Students will gain a basic understanding of what Ren'Py is: an engine designed specifically for creating visual novels in which story-driven 2D game development is easier compared to other engines.
Students will learn how to download and install Ren'Py
Students will learn how to navigate the Ren'Py launcher and create projects. They will also learn how to access Ren'Py documentation in form of a game, which makes implementing various game mechanics more accessible for beginners.
The lecture contains tips on how to approach writing while following this course. Storytelling is a big part of creating visual novels, but for the tutorial purposes students may choose to keep their narratives minimalistic.
Students will learn the basics of Ren'Py by creating a text-based game. They will learn how to create menus and labels. The text based game project shows that game mechanics like story branching and multiple endings are easy to implement in Ren'Py.
Solution to the challenge from the previous lecture.
In this lecture students will learn how to add comments in python.
Students will learn how to setup a visual novel project and add game assets.
Students will learn how to display the character sprites and backgrounds. They will also be able to use the Ren'Py dialogue system.
Students will learn how to display multiple character sprites at the same time and modify their position.
Students will learn how to create smooth transitions.
Students will learn how to manage music and sounds in Ren'Py.
Select your project, click change update gui, choose a new color scheme, regenerate image files, and update your Ren'Py project.
Explore free backgrounds and sprites for your Ren'Py visual novel on itch.io, download packs with a name-your-price option, and review royalty-free licenses for personal or commercial use with possible attribution.
Students will learn how to add python code to Ren'Py files
Students will take first steps in python game development.
Learn how to use flags and a has_studied variable to make dialogue options appear conditionally, changing Susie's sprite and NPC reactions to show that player choices matter.
Explore arithmetic and comparison operators in Python to manage a chi affinity variable, using assignment and augmented assignment, and branch game flow with if, elif, and else conditions.
Add a player name input in Ren'Py by creating a string variable playerName, prompting for input, trimming whitespace, defaulting to 'player' when empty, and displaying the name in dialogue.
This lecture introduces a reputation system by creating chiAffinity and suciAffinity variables set to zero, updating them through player choices, and planning multiple endings tied to reputation.
Create a new Ren'Py project with the default resolution for your visual novel, Tales of the Village. Drag assets into the images and music folders, preserving the folder structure.
Create a new map-screen.rpy file to host a Ren'Py screen that displays a map background, using col screen to stay visible until the player selects a location.
Create interactive map buttons in Ren’Py by using imageButtons with idle sprites and long paths, test with null action, then adjust xpose and ypose to place each button.
Create image buttons from large sprite sheets with surrounding blank space, use focus mask and hover states, connect to labeled actions on a map screen in ren'py.
Learn to use lists in Ren'Py, initialize with the default keyword, index from zero, access the last item via negative indices, and modify with append and pop.
Define Lydia the witch and Darius the warrior, and create location events in Ren'Py. Connect a map to a dispatcher and implement label-based events with Python logic that persists progress.
Create an event system for Darius triggered by house entry using DariusEvents.RPY and a house dispatcher; update image button to jump to correct label and prepare for a time system.
Implement a day-night cycle by introducing a timeOfDay variable, updating backgrounds and sprites for day, evening, and night, and resetting the cycle when sleeping.
Learn how to implement branching in Ren'Py by adding decisions, flags, and separate branch data, creating good and bad endings with Lydia as an example.
Apply music fadeout and fadein transitions in Ren'Py to create smoother audio when entering or leaving locations, adjusting durations (1.0–1.5 seconds) and experimenting with preferences for natural sound.
Create Darius story branches in Ren'Py by designing good and bad paths, adding a branch flag, updating the house dispatcher, and organizing events and labels with branching files.
Learn to create interactions between Lydia's house and Darius's house in Ren'Py using flags, labels, and minor events to trigger dialogue choices and seamless music transitions.
Add flags to track Lydia and Darius outcomes, then use if statements to trigger a good ending when neither is upset and a bad ending otherwise.
Export your Ren'Py game to PC by building distributions for Windows and Linux, producing a zip with an executable that lets you play the game.
Resize images in Gimp to match your project resolution for maps, using layer scale, breaking the chain, and scaling to remove white borders.
Master separating map locations into image button sprites for Ren'Py by using lasso and scissors select tools, refining outlines, and exporting pngs with alpha masks for large and small variants.
Learn to specify the coordinates of an image button by placing it on a separate layer, enabling the layer boundary, and using the pointer to read x and y coordinates.
Learn to transform a game image from day to night by duplicating layers and applying color temperature, hue/saturation, and color balance tweaks, with a blue-toned night result.
Have you ever wanted to create your own visual novel but felt overwhelmed by the technical side of game development? This course is designed to remove that barrier and guide you step by step through the process of building visual novels in Ren’Py even if you have no prior programming experience. If you are interested in story-driven 2D game development or creating games using python, this course was made for you.
Ren’Py is a game engine built specifically for visual novels. Unlike general-purpose engines, it focuses on dialogue, branching narratives, and asset management, which makes it exceptionally efficient for storytellers and artists. While it may feel confusing at first, once you understand its core concepts, the workflow becomes clear and highly productive. If you already have programming experience - especially in Python - you will progress very quickly. If you are starting from scratch, the structured approach in this course will help you become confident within a week.
The course is structured into four progressive sections:
· Section 1 – Foundations
You will build a simple text-based game to understand menus, labels, branching, and multiple endings - the fundamental building blocks of every Ren’Py project.
· Section 2 – Creating a Visual Novel
You will transform your project into a full visual novel by adding sprites, music, backgrounds, character expressions, and branching story paths.
· Section 3 – Meaningful Choices
You will implement flags and a basic reputation system, ensuring that player decisions have long-term consequences and dynamically influence the ending.
· Section 4 – Advanced Systems
You will design an interactive map, manage multiple locations and parallel storylines, introduce a time system, and even create your own layered map with highlight effects and day/night transitions.
By the end of this course, you will be able to design and structure complete visual novels with branching narratives, meaningful decision systems, and interactive world elements. While Ren’Py offers advanced features for complex projects, you do not need them to create a polished, full-fledged game - and this course focuses precisely on what you need to start building immediately.
If you are ready to turn your story ideas into playable visual novels, enroll now and start creating.
