Make to Sell Advanced Patterns in Adobe Photoshop

Learn to make a pattern of wavy lines using a filter to make the waves. You will learn to make the shape symmetrical and how to make a selection of the repeat tile from a larger element. Once the single color design is made you will learn to turn it into a two color design.

In this lecture you will learn to make a series of Argyle patterns.  You will make a single color version, a two color version which is simply done by recoloring one object (because the design was created to make this easy to do). Finally you will learn an amazing trick for creating a black and white argyle pattern in such a way as the dashed lines change color automatically. The lines are white when they appear over the black areas of the design and black when over the white areas - the result looks really complicated to achieve, but it is all done with a single blend mode! 

Create a 50s inspired pattern of vertical curvy lines. This design uses a hand drawn shape that you will draw in Photoshop. If you have never used the Pen tool before this is a good starting point to learn to use it as the shape is easy to draw using the guides you will set up. The design is first made as a single color element and then you will expand it to make it two colors. In this lecture, in addition to making the pattern you will learn to make guides  and how to save selections inside a file so you can reuse them again later on.

Learn to make a range of hexagon patterns from a single starting document. The process of creating this pattern is a little fiddly as you need to line the objects up correctly. I'll show you a couple of ways to do this and how to then create other color versions of this design.

This Turing pattern is developed by repeatedly applying three edits to a basic cloud filled image. Because it is based on a chemical process you actually 'grow' this effect which is pretty amazing! To help you do this faster you will create a couple of really simple Actions to speed up the process of growing your design. Once complete you will learn an alternative way of recoloring your design and also how to crop and save the original pattern swatch for reuse in future.

This visually exciting pattern is quite easy to make and very easy to update using different colors. The pattern utilizes a gradient and to find this spectrum gradient you will learn how to install the Legacy Gradient files. In creating this effect you will create two smart objects which ensures that the design is fully and very easy to edit. By the time you have completed this lecture you will have two very differently colored versions of this design.

In this lecture you will learn so many different Photoshop techniques in making this really colorful organic design! You will use the Clouds filter to create the basic repeat and then apply various filters to it to extract the lines from the design and to recolor the design. Many of the tools used in creating this design are valuable additions to your Photoshop tool kit and can be used in all sorts of situations in future.

In this lecture you will learn to make changes to the basic Pop Art pattern by offsetting the lines from the underlying design and changing the filter settings to get a different effect. Each of the Adjustment Layers and Filters used in the original pattern design can be altered to subtly (and not so subtly) change the look of the design. You will also see how a Hue/Saturation Adjustment layer can be used to change all the colors in the design at the one time - a very handy tool to use in Photoshop.

Learn to create this Japanese style pattern using a series of overlapping circles. In making this pattern you will setup your shapes and then, using a guide as to how big the patter swatch will ultimately be, you will mark out and erase the lines you don't need. This design teaches a range of handy workflow techniques from flood filling areas to erasing lines - in each case the design is created so that pinpoint accuracy isn't required making a complex design relatively easy to do provided you approach it carefully and step by step. 

In this lecture you will see how to clean up the basic pattern file so it can be easily saved to reuse it later on. You will crop the file so it contains the entire pattern and nothing else. Then you will see how to change the color of the pattern and how to invert the colors so white becomes black and vice versa. This process is a smart one to apply when you have an overly complex file - in this case the complexity was required in order to design the pattern but, once complete, it is just a big mess. By cleaning up the file you have a swatch file you can easily reuse in future. 

Learn to make a pattern of swirly loops. The setup for this project will ensure your swirls are perfect and you will learn a technique for coloring the swirls to add variety to the pattern.

In this lecture you will learn to make a basic woven pattern. In doing so you will set up the document with a grid of lines which will make sizing and positioning the shapes to make the pattern very easy.

In this lecture you will learn how to add shading to the design to add dimension to the weave. You will do this by adding gradient filled shapes to the design. You  will also learn how to change the color of the pattern and, if you make a mistake, how to delete a pattern so your pattern collection doesn't include patterns that are wrong.

This lecture is packed with handy techniques. I have given  you an image to use as a starting point and I'll show you how to trace it using the Pen tool to make a knit stitch shape. Once you have made your shape I'll show you how to turn this one shape into a knitting pattern. We will look at how to fill behind the pattern and how to invert it so it is white on black rather than black on white.

Once the pattern is made you are ready to go ahead in the next lecture to add color and designs to your knitting project.

In this lecture you will learn how to recolor the knit stitches and how to add colored stitches to the design - for example to create a red and white design. All the setup for this process has occurred in designing the original pattern so now it is just a case of playing around with filling stitches with color using the paint bucket tool.

In this lecture you will learn to create a diagonal woven pattern. This process is important for sites like Spoonflower because you have to upload a pattern swatch there and you can't rotate the pattern on that site. So, if you want a diagonal weave on Spoonflower the diagonal part of the design has to be created in the actual pattern swatch. To begin we will create the starter document using Smart Objects so it is easy to edit later on which will let us build increasing complexity into the design. 

Now that we have a basic woven pattern let's look at customizing and editing it. In this lecture you will see how, by creating this design using smart objects, it is very easy to edit the design to add more lines and border effects to completely change the look of the pattern.

Learn to make a pattern from a photo. You will learn how to find a suitable photo to use - I like to get my images from unsplash.com. Then remove the image background, add a stroke and assemble your pattern from your prepared image. `
