Highlight the LSVT BIG doctoral capstone with Northern Iowa therapy in the Des Moines metro, covering literature, program overview, telehealth barriers, and the growing need for occupational therapy in Parkinson's.
The needs assessment highlights a growing demand for occupational therapy specialists in Parkinson's disease, emphasizing rural access, fall prevention, and targeted neuro rehab with LSVT BIG.
Explore how LSVT BIG targets amplitude to promote bigger movements for people with Parkinson's, through an intensive 16-session protocol, calibration, and daily homework.
Lsvt big improves motor function, endurance, gait, balance, and independence at home and in the community, with better occupational performance and reduced depression.
Develops clinical practice skills by implementing LSVT big and advocating for patients. Translates LSVT big to home and community living, improving occupational performance and promoting OT certification.
Combine the biomechanical frame of reference with the model of human occupation to address Parkinson's deficits in endurance and movement, promoting self-efficacy and occupational engagement through volition and habituation.
Connects the LSVT Big capstone to program themes by highlighting professional responsibility, evidence-based practice, and community engagement for Parkinson's disease and aging in place in occupational therapy.
Collaborated with northern Iowa therapy at Rock Creek senior living in Ankeny and Des Moines metro partners to deliver capstone services across assisted living, memory care, and independent living.
Analyze and apply evidence-based LSVT BIG in occupational therapy under PT supervision, aligning big movements with fine motor tasks for Parkinson's care; artifacts include an OT intervention guide and handouts.
Demonstrate professionalism, ethical behavior, and advocacy to promote quality care and safety for Parkinson's patients through LSVT big community presentations, educational videos, and outreach events highlighting the growing program.
Identify barriers to Lsvt big therapy and explore telehealth delivery as an accessible option, using clinical reasoning and artifacts that compare benefits and challenges.
Identify benefits and options for OT students pursuing LSVT Big certification, and summarize survey insights on costs, delivery modes, and improved access to multidisciplinary care.
Document progress through the LSVT big program, noting faster walking speed, greater arm swing, longer steps, and improved posture; buttoning improves from over a minute to 20 seconds, tremors persist.
Explore the LSVT big program's key features: big R mode, target, and calibration, how sessions may be customized by progress, noting the $52 billion US PD cost and sit-to-stand tasks.
Acknowledge course references and mentors, thank occupational therapy for participation and OT sessions, recognize rural access insights for lsvt big services, and honor the Parkinson's disease inspiration behind this capstone.
My name is Kalley O'Donnell and I am a third year entry-level occupational therapy doctoral student. This course will outline the doctoral capstone experience completed with Northern Iowa Therapy in Ankeny, IA. The project focus was on Lee Silverman Voice Training (LSVT) BIG for occupational therapy. The presentation will detail a needs assessment and literature review completed prior to the doctoral capstone experience, as well as provide in-depth information on the 14-week doctoral capstone experience.
Throughout this course, you will learn about Parkinson's Disease and its growing incidence and prevalence within the United States. You will also learn about the intensive and evidence-based LSVT BIG program created specifically for people with Parkinson's disease. This course will serve as a learning tool for ways to not only implement LSVT BIG and occupation-based interventions, but will also provide you with additional knowledge on marketing strategies for LSVT BIG services. This course will detail benefits of obtaining LSVT BIG certification as a student and reveal student, clinician, and hiring manager perspectives on obtaining this certification as a student. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to view before and after progress videos from one of the patients that received LSVT BIG services during this capstone experience.
By the end of this course, participants will:
Demonstrate knowledge and understand the need of LSVT BIG
Distinguish barriers and possibilities for LSVT BIG telehealth services
Recognize the growing nature of Parkinson's Disease and the need for therapy services to address this
At the end of this course, questions will be provided to check your learning and understanding of these objectives.
If you are interested in the neurological population, specialized therapy services, Parkinson's Disease intervention, or planning on/currently working with geriatric populations, then this course is right for you!
