Description

We use logic every day, whether we’re aware of it or not. When you woke up today, did you glance out the window and check the temperature to infer that you should put on a light jacket before heading outside? Or put on suncream when you go to the beach on a hot summer day because, in the past, failing to do so has resulted in painful sunburn?

If so, then congratulations! You have applied logic in your daily decision-making without even knowing it.

So whether you’re managing a team or just starting out in your career, relying on a reasoned, logical approach to issues and emerging problems is a very important skill. Questions like how do consumers evaluate and choose products from a company? Or how do people, in general, make inferences about their environment, be it economic, political, social, or personal are at the core in business and psychology.

But recognizing these important logical processes and sharpen them in turn in order to apply them surgically in your daily life or at your workplace is an important skill for you to acquire; since the end result of such reasoning processes is our decisions with respect to a situation.

This course is exactly for those who want to investigate and sharpen their logical reasoning skills that underlie our daily reasoning and are important to forming strategies at work and beyond. Also sharpening these skills will make you able at writing argumentative essays or showing implicitly your strong reasoning skills to your employer during a hiring process.

The reasoning processes of induction which is a bottom-up logic and deduction which is the top-down logic will be primarily covered. Also, numerous examples from daily life and at the workplace will be discussed in order for you to get an intuitive grasp of everyday reasoning and make you able to identify them during a conversation.

Who this course is for:

  • Those who are interested to learn what reasoning processes underlie our reasoning during work and daily life

I have a background in general philosophy and particularly Analytic Philosophy of Science having recently graduated from st Andrews University, Scotland, UK where I studied Logic and Metaphysics.

My goal here is twofold: First, to tranfer you my knowledge in analytical thinking techniques and tools taken from current analytic philosophy and from various philosophers (like Descartes, Hume etc.) and teach you how to apply them in daily life; and Second, to guide you through some fascinating issues within current Philosophy of Science that have to do with the interrelation between reality, perception and language that infiltrate our daily thinking about the world and our place in it.

Additionally my courses are structured in such a way so as little or no background knowledge in philosophy is needed.

Should you ask, my research interests involve:  scientific reasoning, causal explanation, causal models, the philosophy of probability, philosophy of causation and their interrelation  with Philosophy of Physics, Philosophy of Language and Mind, (Formal) Epistemology.
