Course content

5 sections20 lectures1h 18m total length
  • Introduction to Locomotives3:50

Explore how locomotives convert energy from steam, diesel, or electricity into mechanical power to move freight and passengers, and examine modern hybrid and electric systems advancing sustainability.

  • Steam Locomotives Explained3:40

Explore how steam locomotives convert thermal energy into mechanical work using boilers, pistons, connecting rods, and driving wheels, and how thermodynamics guides their efficiency.

  • Diesel Locomotives Explained5:23

Discover how diesel locomotives transformed rail transport with diesel electric and diesel hydraulic systems that convert fuel energy to motion, delivering high torque, precise control, and operation on non-electrified tracks.

  • Electric Locomotives Explained4:19

Electric locomotives draw power from overhead lines or third rails, convert it with inverters and transformers, and propel high-speed or heavy freight with regenerative braking for cleaner rail transport.

  • Locomotive Propulsion Systems4:05

Explore how steam, diesel, and electric propulsion drive efficiency and sustainability in modern rail. Learn about hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, and battery electric innovations.

Description

The Locomotive Engineering: Train Fundamentals Course is a multidisciplinary course where you will study the fundamental concepts regarding the Engineering and Operation of Trains, including physics topics, mechanics, materials, transmission, engine operation and more. My intention is that you fully understand the main topics regarding the Design and Engineering of Locomotives and other vehicles, so that you grasp clearly how to design Cars and how to size their components and choose their materials.

The course is aimed at providing a solid background in Locomotive Engineering so that you can scale up your knowledge in the topic and gain confidence in your own skills. The course is about uniting Engineering and Technical skills for an overall improved know-how of Trains.

The structure of the Course is the following:

Introduction

Fundamentals of Locomotive Engineering

Steam, Diesel and Electric Locomotives Discussion

Locomotive Components and Systems

Aerodynamics and Thermodynamics

Locomotive Innovation and Technology

We will discuss topics such as the design of the Locomotives as they evolved over time and current trends, the forces acting on trains including aerodynamics, and a deep discussion of the thermodynamics involved in their engine operations.

The objectives of the Course are for you to understand the basics and some advanced concepts in the development and design of Locomotives. This will be done in a similar way as studied in Engineering schools, from the fundamental physics concepts to the real application in trains today. The concepts you will learn will enable you to work confidently in Locomotive Projects as well as to expand your knowledge in this topic.

I encourage you to begin this journey to Locomotive Engineering, you won't regret it! If you have any doubts during the course feel free to contact me, I will answer as quick as possible!

Who this course is for:
