Description

Are you comfortable at the Linux command line? These practice tests check what you use every day in a terminal: moving around the file system, managing files and permissions, editing in Vim, looking after users, processes, packages, networking and services, and writing practical bash scripts that do the job safely.

You get 4 practice tests with 160 questions in total (40, 40, 40, 40). Every question was checked twice before release: once by the author against the official documentation, and once by an independent reviewer who answered it blind - any disagreement was settled with a source.

What makes the explanations useful

Each answer tells you why the right option is right and why each wrong option is wrong. The wrong options are real features, commands and settings that are easy to pick by mistake - that is where most of the learning is.

How the tests are built

  • Practice Test 1: Command Line, Files, Permissions and Vim: paths and navigation, wildcards, man pages, copying, moving and deleting files, permissions and umask, find, tar and gzip, and editing in Vim.
  • Practice Test 2: Users, Processes, Packages, Networking and Services: system information and time, users, groups and sudo, password aging, processes and signals, rpm and dnf, ip, ss and nmcli, systemd services, SSH, logs and cron.
  • Practice Test 3: Text Processing and Bash Shell Scripting: redirection and pipes, grep and sed, aliases and history, variables, quoting, tests, if and case, loops, functions, getopts, arrays, set -e, trap and nohup.
  • Practice Test 4: Full Mock Exam: a mixed exam across all three areas - take it last, in one sitting.

Questions use single-answer and multiple-answer formats; the number of answers to pick is always stated. Suggested time: 60 minutes per test.

Versions: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 and 10 (GNU coreutils, bash 5, Vim 9, dnf/yum and rpm, NetworkManager/nmcli, systemd, journald and rsyslog, cron), as of October 2026.
