3 Basic Chords:
I, IV, V7
You can harmonize any folk songs or most hymns with these 3 Basic Chords.
4 Tone Chords:
C6, CM7
F6, FM7
G7
5 Tone Chords:
CM9, C6/9
F6/9, FM9
G9
The 10th Color tone is actually the 3rd tone played an octave higher.
In Music, there is no C10.
In Lead sheets, they are just written as C.
Professional musicians normally don't play C triad (C E G) but Open 10th ( C - G - E) with the E an octave higher.
In Level 2 chord substitutions:
C - C6, CM7, CM9, C6/9
F - F6, FM7, FM9, F6/9
G7 - G9
C Key - 3 minor chords:
Dm - D F A
Em - E G B
Am - A C E

G7 Chord:
Dm and Em can substitute for G7 Chord
G7 Chord has 4 tones: G B D F
Em: E G B - has 2 tones in common with G7
Dm: D F A - has 2 tones in common with G7
C Chord: Am or Em
F Chord: Dm or Am
G7 Chord: Em or Dm
You don't randomly put the minor chords as chords like to move smoothly one to another:
Diatonic chords move in these 4 areas:
1. a third up / a third down
2. a step up / a step down
3. 1/2 a step up / 1/2 step down
4. Follow the Circle Movement
---------
Now that you are have more choices of chord substitutions, you need to be aware of how diatonic chords move in a chord progression. Some choices sound better than others. You need to use your ears to decide which one sounds better when you have many minor chords to choose.
C to Em To G7
1. When a major chord moves up a 3rd (C to Em) it is moving up a Major 3rd.
2. When a minor chord moves up to a major chord (Em to G), it is moving up a minor 3rd.
C to Am to F
F to Dm
F moves down a 3rd to Dm
A Third Down:
C Am F
F Dm
A Third Up:
C Em G7
Minor Chords like to move in stepwise direction:
- One Whole Step Up:
Dm to Em
Smooth Chord Progression:
Minor Chords like to move one whole step down.
Am to G - One whole Step down
Here you have 2 minor chords: Em and Dm.
When Em moves down to Dm, it moves one whole step down.
Another smooth chord movement: Half step up.
Em to F is half a step up, and it sounds great.
You see this kind of movement a lot in chord progression.
Both Circles have the same function!
Tha anticlockwise movement:
Em to Am
Am to Dm
Dm to G7
G7 to C
Circle movement - anticlockwise direction.
When you play on the piano:
Dm to G7
- Perfect 4th Going Up
- Perfect 5th Going Down
Am to Dm
- Perfect 4th Going Up
- Perfect 5th Going Down
Em to Dm
- Perfect 4th Going Up
- Perfect 5th Going Down
