Vedic Astrology explains how each of the planets "gaze" at each other and influence each other, or not.  Western Astrology uses an entirely different system to show how the planets influence each other, such as, sextiles, squares, etc.; yet Jyotish uses the explanation of 'planetary gaze' (Dṛṣṭi).

Just like us humans have a 'preferred location' (i.e. sleep best in our bedroom) where we perform at our highest level, planets also have a 'preferred area' in the natal chart where they perform at their utmost best (depending on their qualities).

Every planet has a unique set of qualities and characteristics that best represent the complexity of our psychology.  Even though all the planets are necessary and neither planet is better or worse than the other, based on our 'human experience', we describe certain planets as being "malefic" or "benefic".  In other words, some planet's influence on our psyche bring either more sorrow or more joy to our lives depending on its particular symbolism.

From our perspective on Earth, what does "Combustion" look like in the sky and how does the proximity (distance) of a planet to the Sun determine the level of combustion.

Look at the Handout and you will see all 12 Ascendants in 6 columns and 2 rows so that you start to learn the patterns and derive more meaning based on the Temporal Benefics & Malefics. It is a fun exercise. Choose any House and its ruling planet for that particular Ascendant and you can see what other Ascendant (Lagna) has that same planet and you'll see the similarities. This is for "pattern recognition" and it will be sure to enhance your learning experience.

You will be able to identify a very common term in Jyotish named "Yoga Karaka". It is a good prerequisite to have before taking Part 3 (Yogas).
