The coaching process typically begins with a pre-coaching session to assess the client’s readiness for coaching and to make personal changes and move forward. This session also helps determine if coaching is the right intervention for the client or if they need any other kind of help such as psychotherapy, in which case they must be referred to an appropriate practitioner or be advised to seek help wherever they feel appropriate. During the pre coaching session it is important to build rapport and trust with the potential client, and show them how you may be able to help them. It is a nice touch to have a client welcome package, I have taken the liberty of attaching a few downloadable documents to get you started.

Together, the coach and the client set an agenda discussing the strategies and timelines, and accordingly decide upon a coaching package that is most suitable for the client. This is the right time for the coach and the client to sign the coaching agreement. Instead of a dedicated pre-coaching session with their clients, many coaches incorporate the elements of the pre-coaching session into the Intake Session. During the intake/first session I introduce clients to the life wheel and assign them homework to write a rough draft life vision.
