Listen as Nicola explains how this painting came about and the objective of painting it.
Only three colours in all.....you can't get much simpler than that.
The addition of paynes grey is optional for the darker area.
Here I will demonstrate how we are going to make a start on this foxglove painting, WITHOUT drawing anything, just by laying down some colour.
Don't feel intimidated, just have a go. A blank piece of paper can be a bit scary, but just take a deep breath and copy what I do as best as you can to get you started.
I have not included any drawing for you to copy as I feel this is a great opportunity you to explore a more free and wet way of painting. I have however added some photographs in the resource section to help you become familiar with the subject.
As we are working very wet into wet we need to allow drying time.
This is an important part of watercolour painting, to understand the drying cycle. Knowing how wet or dry you want the paint to be to get the effect you want.
It's always good to walk away from a painting and come back with a fresh eye. You see things you hadn't noticed when you are working on it. Just prop it up somewhere so that you see it now and again.
To make your work more interesting and to help it stand out from the crowd, make sure you get dark and light areas. They compliment each other.
Knowing when enough is enough can be quite tricky, but I get there in this lecture.
I also look at both of the paintings to compare what I like and don't like about each one. Each one is unique. It's very helpful to your development as a painter and to repeat the exercise, making the changes that you desire.
It's all a learning and help to nourish your creativity.
Here are some extra link which I hope you will find useful.
NEW bonus lecture added August 2023
This is a fabulous course to REALLY loosen up your painting style.
I have marked this painting process at the intermediate level because I believe that it will help a lot of painters push themselves that bit further, no matter what level you are. However if you are an absolute beginner or not prepared to use a lot of water this may not be for you.
Many people enjoy painting floral subjects and this one will show you colour mixing from a very limited palette, exploring light and shade and how to face a blank piece of paper and go straight in with some paint. It will help build you CONFIDENCE too
This painting procedure is for those who want to try a different way of painting with watercolours. Perhaps you are feeling:
'stuck in a rut.'
That your watercolour pictures look dull and lifeless.
That your watercolour work lacks drama.
That you want to paint in a more relaxed and wet style.
That you want to explore what you and your watercolour paints are really capable of.
Work your way through the easy to follow videos as I demonstrate each stage, explain every step stopping naturally as the watercolour paint needs to dry.
If there is anything that you think is not clear and you do not understand in any way then please ask me and I will do everything I can to make improvements.
Why choose one of my courses?
Because, as a self taught artist I understand how a lot of people feel about their creative work, sometimes anxious, sometimes overwhelmed and often that it's not 'good enough'. I will hold your hand as you overcome these fears as I offer a friendly, relaxed and sensitive teaching style.
I also have years of experience of teaching people of all levels both in person and via the internet.
Do one of my courses and you will feel as if I am in the room with you every step of the way.
Enjoy your painting, love Nicola
