Learn the basics of building levels with CryEngine by placing objects, decals, and lighting a scene, then master composition with color grading, HDR, and global illumination.
Explore the CryEngine UI to set up a new project, import buildings, apply textures, decals, and particles, and learn lighting, terrain edits, and how to switch to game.
Learn to set up props in CryEngine by importing from Maya, dragging and dropping, and using scale and snap tools to place items, decals, and textures.
Place foliage thoughtfully in CryEngine by avoiding bushes on concrete, using decals and selective vegetation to enhance realism, and iterating quickly to balance coverage with playability.
Place big props to shape realistic environments, selecting trucks and poles, adjusting position and rotation for balance, and using decals and textures to blend surfaces while avoiding gates.
Finish prop placement by positioning containers, ivy, and campus signs around the parking lot to create a realistic, orderly CryEngine scene.
Learn to light the scene, apply decals, and create particle effects while building levels in CryEngine, and review placing nature and static objects and UI concepts from Quake engine.
Learn to set up CryEngine lighting by positioning the sun, adjusting time of day, and tuning HDR, exposure, bloom, and color balance for a vivid scene.
Learn to composite a level by creating a color grade in Photoshop, exporting a color chart, importing it into CryEngine, and fine-tuning lighting and contrast.
Learn to add and tune particle effects in CryEngine, such as falling leaves and ambient dust, adjusting size, density, life, speed, and color for finishing touches.
In this course, Emiel sleegers gives us a comprehensive introduction to prop placement, environment setup, and general level design within CryEngine. Not only will we hit the ground running with a basic look at the UI, we'll also be covering how to realistically and logically place objects in a level so that the scene makes sense and flows effortlessly. We'll also be covering how to light and add additional compositing effects, and finally to wrap things up, we'll add particles for some additional environmental realism. If you've ever wanted to get a jump-start with building levels in CryEngine, this course is for you!
