Before you get too far down the road, here are some things to consider...
In the video I mention that I like to have my clients setup their own accounts, however, with the Shopify Partners program it's really easy to setup a Shopify account for your client and transfer ownership. The benefit to this is that you will receive a commission from your referral, helping you create more income for your business.
The Shopify Partner Program is a diverse group of designers, developers, marketers, and affiliates who use the Shopify platform to build ecommerce websites, themes, and apps. We offer our partners three great ways to grow their business and generate ongoing monthly revenue:
refer clients to Shopify
create ecommerce themes and publish them in the Shopify Theme Store
create Shopify apps and publish them in the Shopify App Store
As a Shopify Partner, you have access to free training courses, in-depth documentation, and other resources that will help you learn about Shopify and grow your own business. You also have access to insider information about Shopify's product roadmap, previews of upcoming features, and priority Partner support to quickly resolve questions that you or your clients might have.
Select a plan to unlock Shopify’s online store capabilities, explore themes like debut, and learn how to integrate buy buttons with Wordpress while managing sales channels.
In Shopify, add pages to the main menu, create menu items for about and contact, and link internal and external pages; drag to nest submenus and preview changes.
Learn to manually add a simple product to a Shopify store, including title, description from a vendor, image upload, pricing and sale price, inventory, collections, tags, and preview product page.
Learn how to add and manage a blog in Shopify, including posts, featured images, and navigation; showcase products inside posts with a buy button and use apps to customize layouts.
Learn how to enable your payment gateway in Shopify, set up Shopify payments or PayPal, enter routing and account numbers, and start accepting payments with automatic or manual capture.
Configure your store's tax settings in Shopify. Charge taxes based on location or destination using the rate formula, with options for shipping taxes, US VAT, and EU digital goods.
Understanding subdomains can be tricky, and you might be wondering, "why bother?"
Good question. For me, it allows me to use my main domain of "derrickmitchell.com" - something I've already paid for - and add FREE subdomains that point to other services. At the time of this lecture being published, GoDaddy allows up to 100 subdomains per domain name.
I use WordPress for my main site and I like the flexibility of it. Plus, I started with that first and I don't want to make a new website right now even though I could cancel my WordPress hosting on Flywheel and just use Shopify or Kajabi to host all of my static website pages. Then, I started hosting some of my courses on Kajabi so that my students could have access to the content in a way that was structured and also gave me TONS of features in the backend, such as email and marketing tools, landing pages, sales funnels, and of course, "products" that are a collection of all of my course materials.
Shopify is by far the strongest and most user-friendly way for me to sell physical products (unlike digital courses on Kajabi).
I use three different services, and usings subdomains lets me tie them all together. Hopefully that makes sense! Check out the resource links attached to this lecture for more information and examples.
Clarify the project scope for a Shopify site, aligning branding and messaging for personalized functional medicine for athletes and high performers, with a homepage, store, video content, and discovery calls.
Apply a problem-solving workflow to customize a Shopify theme, using note-taking and a wireframe, adjusting image overlays, cropping assets, and editing CSS in the theme assets to shift text placement.
Learn to optimize photos with Photoshop for fast loading across browsers and devices, then craft responsive Shopify imagery by cropping, aligning, and exporting JPEGs at about 70% quality.
Learn how to add products to your Shopify store using the Printful app, design apparel, upload artwork, choose front or back prints, and generate product mockups and collections.
Learn to add a payment method in Shopify, choosing a card or PayPal for billing, capture customer funds, and pay print full to fulfill orders.
Learn to run a test order in your Shopify store by making a real test purchase or enabling test mode. Disable test mode to resume normal checkout.
This course is different than most Shopify courses available. Yes, like most courses, I will get you up and running fast with the absolute basics, as well as guidance, tips, and tricks for the more advanced features and settings.
AND,
I'll show you how I use these skills (building e-commerce websites) to create high-value websites for my clients and how I charge them to do it. Not only that, you can also make additional income just off of referrals as an affiliate with the Shopify Partners program.
Even if you have no intention of freelancing and you just want to build your own online store, no problem! I'll show you everything you need to know to start your journey with e-commerce.
I have over 20 years experience designing with Photoshop, and over 12 years of experience in the creative arts industry building websites and e-commerce platforms, and I have over 100,000 students enrolled across all of my courses. Learning how I build my e-commerce websites for clients was a topic that came up frequently in student questions, and I want to show you my exact process along the way.
I used to only use WooCommerce to build my e-commerce sites on WordPress, but I've been extremely impressed with Shopify and my clients have had good luck with the platform as well. I highly recommend Shopify and I know you're going to love it!
If you see topics that you would like added to this course, or features that need updated then please let me know! I'm building my own personal e-commerce website alongside of this course, and I'll be showing you (coming soon) how I design my apparel and setup my dropshipping. Stay tuned for more!
